I stood and watched
the waves roll in. For the past three weeks, I've been trying to clear my mind
so I can figure out what it is I want to do, and whom I want to do it with.
I keep replaying
that night in the apartment, over and over in my mind. What I could have done
differently, said differently. I know it was a lost cause to keep beating
myself up about it, but my head just wouldn't let go. I knew if I didn't find a
way to move past it, it was going to destroy me.
The pain had been
so great that night, I thought I was going to lose my mind. It felt like I had
been stabbed in the heart. A direct hit, from which I didn't know if I could
recover. My solution was to leave, to run. At the time, I thought some space is
exactly what I needed, but I'm no further along in my self-exploration than I
was when I left.
I'll admit, that
night, I was hurt, scared, and felt humiliated. I mean, how could…. No! I had
to stop thinking like that. It hadn't gotten anywhere. I sat down in the sand
and stared out at the ocean.
Ok, I may not have
had any insight into the situation yet, but coming to Corpus Christi was the
right thing to do. If nothing else, I needed the break. I knew what was going
to happen, or should I say, explode, in the 'burg after that night. I didn't
want to face it. It was the coward's way out, but I didn't care. In hindsight,
I probably should have told someone that I was leaving. I didn't know where I
was headed until I got to the airport, but mentioning I was going away would
have probably been appreciated. Oh well, nothing I could do about that now.
I'll call Trenton soon, maybe tomorrow…
My thoughts were
interrupted when something cold and wet touched the back of my arm.
"Hey!" I exclaimed. I jumped and turned around to face the mangiest
mutt I've ever seen. The minute I had moved, the dog's ears went back and she
rolled over on her back. "Hey girl," I said as I put my hand out,
"I'm not going to hurt you. You just surprised me." She lifted up on
her side, and started to tentatively sniff my hand, but her ears were still
plastered back and her head bobbed a little. "I get the feeling someone
hasn't treated you too well, huh?"
Once the
introductions were complete, I was allowed to scratch her head and feel for a
collar. Nope, none. That means no tags either. She looked kind of haggard and
skinny. Her black fur was matted and dirty. She had white hair on her lower jaw
that ran down her neck to a diamond shape on her chest, then continued on and spread
over her stomach. She looked like a Terrier breed, but her legs were a bit too
long and her ears looked Beagle. Definitely a mutt.
"Well, it was
nice meeting you," I said, "but I'm going back to the house
now." I stood, dust the sand off, and started to walk away. When I turned
back to look for her, she was right on my heels. "No, no, you can't come
home with me. Go on now, get." The only response I received were the ears
going flat and two large puppy dog eyes staring at me. When I leaned down with
an open hand to pet her on the head, and she hunched down, like I was going to
hit her. "Oh no baby, I'm not going to hit you." I very slowly
continued on and gently pet her. By the time I was done, she had once again,
slid into the subordinate position, ears flat, and on her back. I kneeled down
and scratched her tummy. "All right, come on. I'll get you cleaned up and
fed, but then you're on your own." Her ears picked up. She didn't believe
about the 'on your own' stuff, but that's ok, I didn't really mean it.

Three weeks and
nothing. Not a word, a note or a phone call. I was losing my patience.
Actually, I had lost my patience after just a couple days. The guys talked me into
waiting it out, but I was over that plan. It was time to start searching.
The Chase - Chapter 1
Tell me, did you sail across
the sun,
Did you make it to the Milky
Way to see the lights all faded,
And that heaven is
overrated. Drops of Jupiter - Train
**********************************************
The day after Ranger walked
out
I
sat, unflinching, in front of 3 emotionless faces. These goons thought the intimidation treatment was going to have
an effect… lightweights. It didn't work
last night and it sure the hell wasn’t going to work now. Too much is at stake.
"Tell
me again, Bombshell, why you just didn't tell Ranger your date was with
Bobby?" If Tank keeps talking to
me like I'm twelve, I'm going to shoot him. We may be sitting at Pino's, but
that wouldn't stop me. The fact my gun
was home unloaded, in the cookie jar, well…that could stop me…for now.
I
took one huge breath and let it out in a dramatic sigh, that I'm sure could out
do any twelve year olds attitude when being scolded, and started the
explanation again. "It's like this
Tank," I said in my best, I'm talking slow because your being slow, voice,
"it was, and still is, no one else's business."
He
didn't seem satisfied, but decided to turn his attention to someone else for
the moment. "And you," this
was directed at Bobby, "what the hell were you thinking? Asking Bombshell out on a date and making
with the mystery man shit for seven days?" Before Bobby could even respond, Tank turned to Lester. "And you! How fucked up were you to
even consider helping him?" Uh oh,
Tank was getting worked up. It took us
2 hours last night to calm him down.
Lester had called both Bobby and Tank after Ranger left. The troops arrived in the middle of my
sobbing and things went down from there.
Tank ranted, raved and scolded for what seemed like forever. Lester kept trying to calm him down, which
didn't work very well. Bobby just sat
there, never uttered a word the whole time.
"Tank!"
Not only did I get Tank's attention, but also, the whole damn place was staring
at me. Oops. I lowered my voice and I said "Tank, we did all this last
night. It's time to move on."
Tank
narrowed his eye and leaned in over the table.
In an angry whisper he said "Stephanie, exactly how can we move on when we don't know what happened?"
That
did it. I jumped up. Watch out - pissed 'burg girl coming
through. I stood with my feet spread and my hands on my hips, trying to gain
some composure before I lost it.
Slowly, I took a breath and let it out, then bent over to put both
hands, palms down, on the table to lean in towards Tank. "Tank, you seem to be stuck on the why,
you already know the what. And since
you can't seem to change your focus to something more constructive, I'm through
here. I've told you all I'm going
to. If Bobby wants to tell you his
story, that's his prerogative."
The
minute, no the second, those words left my mouth, I regretted it. Tank looked like he could just about
strangle me. I know he could send me
off to a Third World County at the snap of his fingers. I was hoping he didn't
have it in him to hurt me. I needed out
of here, fast.
I straightened, grabbed my pocketbook and
stomped out. I was jamming my helmet
on, when Bobby came out and walked over.
"Steph,
cut Tank some slack. He's just worried
about Ranger. We can't find him. I'm sure he'll show up in a couple days, but
we don't want him out there by himself in whatever state he is in. He could get hurt if he's caught off guard
and no one's watching his back."
I
started to feel the tears build behind my eyes. I blinked them back as best I could. "I know Bobby," I sighed. "I'm worried about him
too." I leaned against my bike and
took my helmet off. Looking down at the
helmet in my hands I said, "You can tell them whatever you want. We never agreed we weren't going to say
anything. I don't want you taking the
heat because of my personal opinion."
Bobby
put his hand under my face, and lifted my chin. "Hey Sweetlips, I happen to agree with your
opinion."
I
gave him a weak smile. "Thanks Bobby."
Just
then Tank and Lester came out of Pino's.
Tank crossed the parking lot with just a few large strides, almost in a
sprint.
"Bombshell,"
he said as he grabbed me and pulled me into a crushing embrace.
That's
all it took for the floodgates to open for the umpteenth time in the last 12
hours. I felt my helmet being tugged
out of my hands, as Tank guided me over to the Bronco and helped me get
in. I managed to calm down to quietly
weeping by the time we pulled up to my apartment. I started to get out of the Bronco when Lester pulled up on my
bike. He walked over, handed me the
helmet, kissed me on the cheek and got in the other Bronco Bobby was
driving. They drove off and left me
with Tank. Swell.
Maybe
he won’t come up with me. “Thanks for the ride Tank. I’ll be ok from here.”
“Not
so fast, Sweetheart. We need to
talk.” How many damn times am I going
to hear that come out of a man’s mouth?
What could I do at this point? I
just shrugged and headed inside.
Tank
and I had settled in the kitchen, eating bowls of ice cream. Neither of us had
said a word since coming into the apartment.
I ate my ice cream slow, but that just caused it to melt. I guess I could sacrifice some ice cream for
the sake of not having to talk. I
scooped up the very last bit of ice cream I could, when Tank stood, took our
bowls and put them in the sink.
“Bombshell,
I’m sorry I got upset at Pino’s.” He
looked really concerned. I tell ya,
these guys could pummel some dirt bag into the ground with their bare hands,
but get one ‘burg chick on their ass, and they melt like butter.
“I’m
sorry too, Tank. I know we’re all on
edge.” I was playing with the napkin I
had used while eating my ice cream.
“I
understand why you don’t want to tell us any details of your dinner with
Bobby.” I looked skeptical. “I do
Steph, I really do. But if you tell me,
something might come out of it that could tell me where Ranger could be.” Oh, that was smooth. He really thought he was going to get me
with that one.
I
looked his square in the eye when I spoke. “That’s an excellent theory,
Tank. The only problem is, I didn’t
tell Ranger any details. Wherever he is
at, couldn’t be effected by what was said at Bobby’s, because Ranger doesn’t know what was said at
Bobby’s.” Stick that in your pipe
and smoke it. I got up and went into
the living room to sit.
I
heard Tank sigh, then heard his footsteps follow me into the living room. I
threw myself down onto the couch and settled back into the corner. Tank opted for
the chair.
“Then
tell me what was said between you and Ranger.” Now that’s a request I can live
with. Last night there were too many emotions and tears to get it all out so it
made sense.
“I
came home and Ranger was waiting for me in the dark. He asked if I had a good night out. I told him I did. When he
noticed what I was wearing he asked me if I had been out with Morelli. I didn’t
answer him. Then he asked me to tell him who I was with. He said if it was Morelli, he could handle
that because he knew ‘all the players’. He said when I told him I was on a
date; he thought he had lost me. I told him I wasn’t going to say, but I did
tell him that I didn’t sleep with the person I was with. I told him that person already knew my heart
belonged to someone else, even when I refused to admit it to myself. That it
was a one-night deal. Then he asked me who my heart belonged to.” I paused at
this point because I was starting to get embarrassed. I felt the heat rise in my face.
I looked down and spoke to the couch cushion. Whispering I said, “I told Ranger it was him. He was the one who
had my heart.” I paused, really not wanting to tell Tank what happened
next. “We…umm…starting kissing and
stuff.” It came out in a rush. “Then
Lester knocked…and you know the rest.”
My face was on fire. “So you see
Tank, I don’t understand Ranger’s reaction.”
Tank
nodded his head and looked thoughtful for a few sections before speaking. “I’m not sure myself. Maybe he was ok with it up until he heard a
name. Then maybe it became more
real. Maybe he became scared.”
“Scared? Scared?
Batman doesn’t do scared.
Besides, we…we were in the middle of…we were showing each other how much
we cared. He knew he had me. I had just told him so.” We sat in silence for
awhile, each thinking our own thoughts.
I didn’t totally buy the whole ‘scared’ theory. I’ll give he some of that, but it’s not the
majority. His reaction had something to
do with Bobby.
“Tank,
is there a history between Bobby and Ranger I don’t know about?”
“There
are lots of things in both their histories you don’t know about.”
“That’s
not what I’m asking and you know it.”
Letting
out a breath, Tank said “I know what you’re asking, Bombshell.”
“Tank?”
“Listen,
you’re not the only one who has things they want to keep private.”
“Oh,
I see. You can grill me, try to
pressure and intimidate me into telling you my private information, but I can’t
do the same to you, is that it?”
Tank
shook his head and stood. “Stephanie, don’t worry too much ok? He’ll be back. He’s probably just cooling off somewhere. Let’s give him some time to do that.” I know when I’m being pacified. I needed to play along for now. I needed Tank on my side.
“All
right, Tank. Let’s give him some
time. But you have to promise me that if
he isn’t back soon, we’ll start to look for him.” Tank’s shoulders slumped. I stood and walked over to face
him. Taking his hands in mine, I said,
“This is hard on all of us. You’ve
known him longer, so I’ll trust that you know what you’re doing when you ask me
to give him some time.” He nodded then we walked to the door.
“He’ll
be back soon…probably the next day or two.”
I could swear he was trying to convince himself and not me. I gave a small smile and nodded in reply. Tank kissed me on the cheek, looked into my
eyes for a brief moment, then left.
I
shut the door behind Tank and leaned back against it. I’ll wait as Tank asked, but I have limits and as soon as that
limit is reached, I’ll look for him my way.
First, I need to get some background information. I walked over to the phone and dialed.
“Hi,
it’s me…I’m ok…yeah…I know…hey, can we meet tomorrow? Good…I’ll be there.”
The
Chase - Chapter 2
Three weeks later
I
sat in the back booth at Pino's, waiting for him to arrive. Three weeks ago I had been sitting in the
same place waiting for a different man to arrive. My meeting today better go a whole hell of a lot better.
After
Tank had convinced me to wait and see if Ranger returned on his own, I had
called and asked Lester to meet with me.
I had the feeling I was missing some vital pieces of information and
figured Lester would be the easiest one to crack. Boy, was I wrong. He
wouldn't say a word. All I got out of
him was what I already suspected. There
was a history between Ranger and Bobby, and it involved a woman. Ever since talking with Lester, Bobby had
made himself scarce. Come to think of
it, so has Tank. They know something
that they don't want to tell me.
Avoidance is not going to stop a determined 'burg girl.
My
musings were interrupted by a deep male voice.
"Hey
Cupcake. You ok? I can see the smoke
coming out your ears from the serious thinking you were just doing."
I
smiled when I looked up into those gorgeous brown eyes. "Hi Joe. Thanks for meeting me."
Joe and I had settled into a comfortable friendship after we realized
that, as a couple, we weren't meant to be. We haven't had any pizza beer
nights, but I think that will eventually return with time.
"No
problem Cupcake. I've missed
you." This is the part we needed
to get past, the look of sadness and regret he got when remembering what he let
go of.
"I've
missed you too, Joe." I meant
it. Joe had been my friend, as well as
my lover. I missed my friend. We sat quietly for a few minutes until the
waitress finally came over to take our order.
I
looked down and started to fiddle with my glass of beer. "Joe," I hesitated, "I need
to ask a favor." I held my breath.
This was the first time I had asked anything of Joe since we broke up.
His
hand came across the table to capture mine. "Stephanie," I looked up
at him, "you can ask me anything, ok?"
Smiling
I said "Thanks, Joe." I
looked back down at my beer. "I
hoping you'll help me find Ranger."
I tried to sneak a glance at his face.
He looked completely surprised.
"How
long has be been gone?" he finally managed to choke out.
"About
three weeks."
"Steph,
he's probably working some case. It's
just taking longer than he expected.
You and I both know how that goes." I was shaking my head. Joe must have seen my pained expression
because his next question sounded very concerned "Is he in trouble? If he's in trouble, Cupcake, I'll see what I
can do, but he's sometimes better connected than we are." The 'we' being the Trenton Police
Department. "I'm sure his men are working on finding him…"
I
cut him off. "No, Joe. Well at
least I don't think he's in trouble."
Joe looked confused and suddenly his eyes narrowed.
"Maybe
you better tell me what exactly is going on." Joe knew me too well. He
knows my talent for getting caught up in crazy situations.
"Well,
three weeks ago…Ranger and I were in my apartment…and…well…he left and hasn't
been back." This earned me the
'I'm not buying it' look.
"I'm
not buying it, Cupcake.
Spill." Damn.
I
told him the whole story. From the
first visit from the mystery man, to finding out it was Bobby, and then
wrapping it up with the ugly scene right before Ranger left. By the end I was
quietly crying. Even through my tears I could see the wounded look in Joe's
eyes right before he put his cop face on.
He wanted to know, so I told him and consequently hurt him. I can't deal with that right now. Nursing Joe's heart is not what I should be
doing, especially since I was the one who hurt it.
"Steph,
if Manoso want's to disappear, he can.
If he doesn't want to be found, he won't." Joe let out a big sigh. "What about his
guys? Do they know where he's
at?" I shook my head.
"Or,
they just aren't telling me. They have
been scarce lately. I told Tank I would
only wait so long. Well,l I've reached
my limit. It's time for me to start
looking."
Joe
must have seen something in my eyes, because his next question took me by
surprise. "You really love him,
don't you." It sounded like a
question, but I knew it was a statement. I just nodded my head. I'd managed to stop crying and was left
sniffling.
"I
can't promise you anything, but I'll see if I can dig up anything,
ok?" He softly chuckled when he
caught the look of surprise on my face.
"Stephanie, I still care about you. I want you to be happy.
If Manoso makes you happy…" he trailed off. Giving me a small smile, he stood and said,
"I've got to get back." He
threw some money on the table. "I'll let you know what I find, either
way."
I
stood and gave him a big hug.
"Thanks, Joe. I wasn't
going to ask you, but…"
Grabbing
my face in his hands, he looked directly into my eyes. "Anytime Cupcake,
anytime." He gave me a peck on the
cheek, then turned and walked out.
***********************************
I
was on my way back to the beach house after picking up Maxie from the
groomers. The mangy mutt was now clean
and shaven. After she came home with me
yesterday, I knew she was here to stay.
I ended up going out last night and buying all the essentials for
her. When I dropped her off this
morning, the woman at the groomers asked for the dog's name. When I told her I didn't have one, the woman
shrugged and put Maxie on the form. I
figured that was that.
I
was in the middle of telling Maxie how pretty she looked and smelled, when I
saw the flashing lights of a cop car in my rearview mirror. Shit. I just hope it isn't one of those
'good ol' boy' cops.
I
rolled down my window as he approached.
He did the standard procedure thing and stood back from the door, making
me turn my head in order to see him. At
the same time I could sense his eyes scanning the car and me. Maxie has her nose pressed against the back
seat driver's side window.
"License
and registration" I silently gave
him what he asked for. He turned and
walked back to his squad car.
Maxie
came up and put her nose on the edge of my seat, right next to the
headrest. I reached behind and
scratched her head. "Don't worry
girl. This car's legit."
I
watched my review mirror as the cop walked back up to the car. He handed me back the papers and said,
"Thank you Mr. Manoso. Everything
checks out."
"Was
I speeding?"
Coming
up to stand directly by the driver's side door, the cop crouched down to talk
with me. "No. Some of the people who live along the beech
have been calling and reporting a stranger walking on the beach, and some have
mentioned an unknown car in the area.
We checked with Mrs. Pierson.
She told us she had rented her beach house."
I
nodded. The cop was sizing me up. I did the same to him. He was probably close to my age and height. Nowhere near my build, but he looked strong
and tough. I'd want him on my side in a
fight.
"Thank
you, Officer." I didn't have any
reason to thank him since he pulled me over without provocation, but I knew how
to pick my battles. This is one that
could be avoided.
He
reached out a hand to me. "Baker.
David Baker." We shook
hands. I didn't bother with my name,
since he obviously knew it. "Well, I don't mean to keep ya Mr.
Manoso. Enjoy the rest of your
visit."
"Will
do, " I said as I nodded again.
Officer Baker went back to his car and pulled away.
*******************************************
As I
pulled away, I wondered how Mr. Manoso was able to afford that Jag. It's a damn sweet car. Drugs? Maybe. Guns? Maybe. I think I need to go back to the station and
run Mr. Manoso through the system.
*******************************************
"Come
on, Tank!" I yelled. "Help me
find him!" Tank just sat there
with that stupid blank expression.
"I
told you Bombshell…"
"I
heard you the first, second, and third time you said no. That's not an acceptable answer Tank. Why
won't you help me find him?" A thought struck me. "You know where he is! You know, and
haven't told me!" I was just about
reach to launch myself at Tank, when he spoke.
"Steph,
I don't know where he is. I swear to
you. I have heard from him. He sent an email saying he was ok and he'd
be back when he'd be back. I've been
looking for him, I really have."
I
was floored. "You couldn't even
tell me he was ok? You let me worry for the past 3 weeks?"
"Ranger
asked that I not tell anyone I had heard from him."
"Do
the others know?" He lowered his head and refused to meet my eyes. "So, he asked that you not tell me, is
that it?" No answer. Shit.
"You son-of-a-bitch…" I trailed off under my breath.
I
turned and stomped out of Tank's house.
I sat in my car crying and cursing.
I jumped when I heard a tap on my window.
"Bombshell,
please come back inside. You're in no condition to drive." He eyes begged for forgiveness.
I wiped my eyes and stared at him out the
window. He wasn't going to help me, and
I knew that Lester wouldn't either. Bobby might, but I can't find him. He left on assignment a week ago. Tank said he has asked to go. I got the feeling that even if Tank managed
to locate Ranger, he wouldn't tell me. I turned to face forward, stared the car
and drove away.
*************************************************
I
couldn't believe my luck. I sat there,
dumbfounded, as I stared at the information in front of me. "Damn." I said as a smile broke
out on my face. But it faded as quickly
as it came. I have to decide if I'm
going to tell her what I found. I don't
want to make her anymore upset than she already is. I decided I needed to check this out for myself first, before I
told anyone. I stood, snatched up my keys and headed to the airport.
************************************************
I
pulled up in front of the house around 6 p.m.
I had been lucky, again, that a flight was leaving within an hour when I
got to the airport. Now sitting in his
driveway, I had to wonder if I was doing the right thing. He wanted to be left alone, maybe I should
just let him be. Oh Christ. I had
already come all this way and besides, he was walking up the beach toward the
house when he noticed my car. I got out
of the rental and started my way down towards the beach. A small black dog had come up and jumped up
on my legs, obviously wanting to be petted.
I had reached down and scratched its head, when a pair of bare feet came
into my view.
"Maxie,"
was all he said.
"Well
hello there Maxie." I scratched some more, but quit when she rolled on her
back offering her tummy for a rub. I
straightened up and looked at the man in front of me. Shit, this trip was probably going to cost me.
"Manoso,"
I said.
"Morelli."
The
Chase - Chapter 3
Shit,
what was Morelli doing here? How did he
find me? Baker. That stupid…he must have went back to the
station and checked me out. I should
have used a different name. Next time
I'll be sure not to be so distracted.
"Come
on up to the house." Morelli nodded and followed me up.
When
we entered the kitchen, I motioned him to a chair and started the coffeepot. I
sat across from him and gave him the best blank face I had. "What brings you, Morelli?" He
just stared back. His cop face could
give my blank face a run for the money any day.
Instead
of answering, he looked down at the dog and said, "Nice mutt. Where'd you
find her?"
"She
adopted me on the beach. So far, it
seems to be a match made in heaven. She's quiet." He grunted and nodded his head as if he
understood.
"So,
what brings you, Morelli?" He
wasn't going to be able to dodge the question too much longer.
"Steph
asked me to look for you." I had
to concentrate not to show the shock on my face.
"You
found me." If he was wondering why
I didn't ask him how he found me, he didn’t show it. He knew, that I knew, how he found me. We both also knew, that meant Tank or one of the guys was going
to be right behind him. I'm really
surprised he got here before them.
"Look,
I know this isn't any of my business. She asked me to find you and I did."
"But
the question remains, what brings you?" If I was a betting man, I'd bet he hadn't
told Steph he found me.
He
left out a soft laugh. "Honestly Manoso, I have no idea." I had to smile myself. I knew what he meant. Stephanie had an effect on people that had
them doing things they never thought they would. We both sat quietly, thinking our own thoughts about the same
woman.
Morelli
broke the silence first. "She told
me what happened." I know I looked
surprised at that. I would have never
thought she'd tell Morelli the whole story. Again, I underestimated her. I saw the hurt in his eyes. I realized why he was here. He didn't want her to get hurt. He really loved her. That thought brought a pain to my chest.
He
let out another soft laugh. "Yeah, I was surprised she told me too."
He paused before continuing. His look turned serious. "Ranger, man, she
loves you." My stomach did a flip
and I felt that twinge in my heart again.
I just kept staring at him, mostly because I've been trained not to show
weakness, but I wanted to turn away. I
wanted to run away from the pain. I didn't say a word.
He
gave it one more shot. Looking at the table, he said, "I know how much it
hurts to think she wants someone else."
He paused to look up at me. His
unspoken meaning didn't go unheard.
"But I also know, that if you lose her, you'll be kicking yourself
the rest of your life. Don't let her
slip away because of pride, because of a misunderstanding. It's not worth it. She wants you man, you."
I just realized how hard it was for him to come here and especially to
say those things.
I
took a deep breath, letting it out in a big sigh, and looked out the window at
the beach. "Stephanie, " That's
the first time I said her name out loud in three weeks, and it stung. I started again. "She went on a date with him." I closed my eyes.
"He asked her out and she went…with him."
"She
didn't know what you wanted…" That got me up in a hurry. I knocked over my chair in the process,
which caused Maxie to scurry into her bed in the corner.
"She
knew. I've been making moves
since…" I trailed off. That's not
the place to go with Morelli. He stood
as quickly and as violently as I did.
We both stood there, in aggressive postures, with fists clenched.
"You
don't need to fucking tell me how long you've been after her. I know all too damn well," he said in a
controlled whisper.
"You're
the one, Morelli, who worked against her when she was trying to do her job.
You're the one who'd disappear at a moments notice and not tell her."
"And
what the fuck do you think you did three weeks ago!" He had stopped me cold. He had a point and I hated him for making
it.
I
had to get out of the house. If I stayed
I'd end up punching him. That would get
us no where. I brushed past him and out
the door to the back porch. I had
stayed out there for about an hour to watch the sun set and started to wonder
what Morelli was up to. He hadn't left, I would have heard his car. I wandered
back in and found him and Maxie asleep on the couch. Max was curled up behind he knees. When I came in the room, Maxie
woke and jumped down from the couch. This also woke Morelli.
"You
hungry?" I asked. He sat up,
rubbed his eyes with the palms of his hands and nodded. I turned and went into
the kitchen to make dinner.
We
ate in silence, which was just fine with me.
After cleaning up, Morelli said he was going down to the water. I must have nodded off, because the next thing
I'm knew, Maxie was licking my hand as I sat in the easy chair. I looked over to see Morelli leaning against
the doorframe.
"When's
your flight back?"
"Tomorrow
morning. I should get to the
hotel." He pushed off and started
to leave.
"No,
you can stay here. There's plenty of rooms." He looked shocked, but followed me up the stairs without a word.
"You
want to run in the morning?"
"Sure,"
he said, as I left him standing in front of his room, and walked into mine.
We
woke at 6:00 a.m. and went running. I
lent Morelli a pair of trunks in case he wanted to take a swim, and after the
run, we did.
A
little while later we were sitting on the beach with Maxie in-between us. Three sets of eyes staring out into the
sea.
Again,
Morelli was the first to break the silence, but this time with a laugh. He sat there and laughed like he just heard
the funniest joke. Maxie and I looked
over and I raised my eyebrow.
He
explained between chuckles "I'm sitting here… trying to figure out…how to
convince you…to go back to Stephanie."
He broke out in a solid laugh.
"How fucking messed up is that?" Calming down some, he finally
ended with, "Shit." Then he
sighed.
We
continued to sit there, when Morelli said, "So, you have any scum bags
after you this month?" I shrugged.
" Well, I'm pretty clean right
now." He said then paused.
"There
is someone approaching us from behind."
No one turned around; even Maxie kept looking straight ahead.
"I
know."
*******************************************
I parked
the car and got out. I was still
debating if this was a good idea.
Letting out a breath, I decided I had no choice. I didn't like it, not
one bit. But if he wouldn't come to me,
I'd go to him. This is no time for
pride to get in the way. I gave myself a small pep talk…come on Steph, you can
do this, you're the bombshell bounty hunter. With that, I pushed all doubt to
the side, and walked toward the inevitable.
The
Chase – Chapter 4
I
noticed two figures sitting on the beach, a dog between them. I couldn’t put it off any longer. I started to approach.
“There
is someone approaching us from behind.” Morelli stated.
“I
know” I wasn’t too concerned. I knew who it was. I waited until he was directly behind us, and then spoke.
“Yo,
Tank.”
Tank
plopped down in the sand. “Hey,
Boss. Morelli.”
***********************************************
When
I got to the door, I took a deep breath. Ok, here it goes. Knock. Knock. I heard the click of some locks and the
chain sliding back. The door opened and
I looked down.
“What
the hell do you want?” he asked.
“I
was hoping you could help me. I have a problem.”
“You’re
such a loser.” He slammed the door in
my face.
Bang.
Bang. Bang. “Open the door Briggs,” I
commanded.
“You
almost got me killed, Loser. Go away.”
I rolled my eyes. “Look Briggs, it’s nothing dangerous like that. I need you to help me find someone. You can do it from the safety of the Wanka
Factory.”
“Smartass.”
“I’ll
pay you.” Yeah, when I figure out how.
The
door swung back open. "You got the
money to pay me."
"Sure." No
"You
got the money to pay me now?" I didn't respond. "Forget it, Loser."
I put my foot in the door this time.
"Look,
Randy, a friend of mine took off and I need to track him down. Please." I
wasn't above begging at this point.
"If
you haven't got the money…." I cut
him off.
"I'll
pay you Briggs. I swear. It may not be all at once, but you'll get
your money. Do it for the sake of true
love. Please, I really need your help “ I’d even get on my knees if the
situation calls for it. Although, that
would put me level with Briggs and I might end up strangling him.
He
looked up to study me. "Finally got yourself a live one, and he runs
away?” He stopped to laugh. Yeah, yuk
it up. “All right, come on in," he
said walking away from the door, leaving it open.
We
sat down at his kitchen table, and I watched as he poked at some keys on his
laptop. I tried to see what he was
typing when he lowered the top. "Hey, Plum, this is sensitive information.” He waved his hand at me in a back off
gesture. “ Now, tell me who you are looking for."
"Ricardo
Carlos Manoso, a.k.a Ranger."
"Address?"
"Don't
know."
"Birthdate?"
"Don't
know."
"Social
Security Number?"
I
rolled my eyes. "If I don't know his address, do you really think I'd know
his social security number?"
He
let out a big sigh. "Fine, what do you know?"
"Ricardo
Carlos Manoso, a.k.a Ranger." I said sheepishly. "Oh! And he's from
Miami…originally…and…he works for Vincent Plum Bail Bonds…umm…he owns a
building in Boston…and…and…drives a Mercedes, or sometimes a BMW….and sometimes
a Bronco."
"You
got plate numbers?"
And
here I thought I was doing well. "No."
"For
Christ's sake, Plum, how about a damn phone number."
"Well…umm…I
can't give it to you." He just
rolled his eyes and looked at me like I was as leper.
Briggs
busied himself with more typing on the keyboard, while I sat and waited.
****************************************
Morelli
was getting ready to leave when I asked, "Are you going to tell Steph you
found me?" I could see Tank tense in his chair.
Morelli
studied me for 2 beats then spoke. "I don't know why you won't go home to
her. I'm not entirely sure why you left
in the first place. Whatever happened
between Steph and Bobby isn't going to happen again. I told you this yesterday, and I won't ever say it again, she's
in love with you. If that's not enough
for you, or it scares you, too bad." With that said, he turned, petted
Maxie on the head, and walked out the door.
Tank
looked shocked. "Ric, is that why super cop came here? To tell you that?" I didn't respond.
Tank
stood, and started to head up the stairs, then paused and turned back around.
"We've been friends for a long time and I've seen you go through a
lot…" He paused again, and looked at the floor for a second before looking
back up at me. "Don't throw this
away."
I
took a step forward with my hands fisted at my sides. Tank didn't move. This
man, this friend, I couldn't intimidate.
"He's doing it again," I said a little more strongly than I
intended.
"No,
Ric, he's not. This is a completely
different situation." Tank raised
a hand to stop when he knew was coming. "She didn't know what you wanted,
man. Moves or not, she's insecure about relationships. Look at her track record. Can you blame her?
I'd have to say, that if I were in Bombshell's shoes, I would have done the
same thing." I raised an eyebrow.
"You'd
go out with Bobby," I said with an evil grin. My anger had dissipated, because I knew he was right…about some
things. He knew I was just giving him shit.
A
sardonic smile played on his lips. "Yeah, and we'd make a great couple
too." He turned and finished his
way up the stairs. I thought I hear him mumble 'shithead', but I couldn't be
sure.
I
woke at 8:00 a.m. I thought that was
odd. I never sleep this late. Ranger never lets me sleep this late if
we're in the same house. I stumble down
the stairs to get some coffee and met Lester in the kitchen. He had arrived last night before
dinner.
"Hey
man, what's going on? Ranger and the
mutt runnin'?" I asked as I poured myself some coffee. "He never lets
me sleep late". I looked up at
Lester when he didn’t respond. I followed
his gaze to the middle of the table.
Shit.
"Well?"
"Well
what? No way, Tank. I was waiting for you." Great.
"Chicken."
"You
betchya"
****************************************************
I
burst into the station with steam coming out my ears. I zeroed in on my prey.
"Joseph Morelli!!" I screamed. He looked up from his desk and he looked scared. Good.
"What
the hell did you do!" I demanded.
"Calm
down, Cupcake."
"Don't
freakin' 'Cupcake' me, you slimy piece of …"
"Steph! Let's go into interrogation one, ok?"
"Fine!" I couldn't seem to stop screaming, but then
I didn't want to.
Placing
a hand behind my back, trying to look like he was escorting me gently, Joe
ushered us into the sound proof room.
"Why
didn’t you tell me you found him?
Why!"
"Steph,
calm down…"
"NO! I don't WANT to calm down. I asked you to find him. Not go and see
him! And then you don't even tell me!"
"He's
in Corpus Christi." No shit, I
knew that…now.
"I
know that Joe. Randy Briggs found that
out for me. He also informed me, my
'super cop' boyfriend bought a ticket for Corpus too."
"He
really thinks that?"
"What?"
I asked not hiding my frustration. "That you bought a ticket? Don't try to
get out of it Joe. I saw the
reservation!"
"We'll
talk about how you happen to see that later." He stopped to give me a
warning look.
"Oh.
Well, I told him you weren't my boyfriend anymore…"
"No,
not that." He had a grin on his face from ear to ear. I couldn't figure out what he was getting
at. I gave him my best 'what?' look.
"That I'm a super cop." I
rolled my eyes back so far I thought I might pass out. Men.
I
snorted, "Yeah, whatever. That's not the topic!"
He
sighed. "I know Cupcake. I found
him. I went to talk to him. I did it…I did it…I just don't want you to
get hurt. I wanted to make sure he
wasn't playing with you."
Oh
great. How can I stay mad if he's going
to be so damn sweet? Still…
“That’s
not your job Joe. I can take care of
myself.”
“I
know Cupcake. You’re still important to
me. I still care about you.” He looked
down at the dirty floor.
Letting out all my frustration and anger in
on big sigh, I asked sheepishly, "And? Is he? You know…playing games with me?" I watched as the cop face fell into place. This can't be good.
"Steph,
I don't honestly know. I found him
sitting on the beach with a dog. I stayed one night, then left." Morelli
knew me too well, because he was ready for my questions. "Before you even
ask, yes we did talk. I don’t know anything
other than this has something to do with the past and Bobby. And that he named the mutt Maxie,” he said
and shrugged. “I also told him that you
loved him and he’s a fool if he stays away.”
I almost didn’t hear him. He said it so soft.
My
jaw dropped to the floor.
The Chase - Chapter
5
I was in my bedroom
packing my bags, so I could go to Texas, when I heard my front door open and
close.
"Bombshell?"
Ok, not really the
guy I wanted to see right now. Morelli had filled me in on how Tank showed up in
Texas.
"Get out
Tank!" I yelled down the hall.
"Come on
Steph, don’t be like that, please?" I like to make big ex-army men beg.
I went to stomp out
of my bedroom, when I hit a brick wall…oh…no, it was Tank. I poked my index
finger in his chest. It probably hurt me more than him.
"Listen Tank,
you knew where he was too and didn’t tell me. You men! You all stick
together!" I shrieked. "Frist…first you tell me to give him time. So,
I give him time." As I talk, I continually poked him in the chest. He
stared to step backward. I was moving Tank with one finger! "Then, when
I’m done waiting, I ask you to help me. You turn me down flat. I ask Joe to
help me. Oh sure, he helps me…by finding Ranger and then not telling me!"
I could feel my face turn red with anger.
"Bombshell,
Steph…calm down please." My control of the situation was about to end.
Tank gathered me up in a huge embrace, and held me completely still. I couldn’t
move my arms and had limited reach with my head. I gave in. Why fight a losing
battle?
Once Tank felt me
go limp, he walked me over to the couch, and we sat.
"Ranger left
this letter for you." I stared at the envelope in Tank’s hand. I couldn’t
move.
"Left it? What
do you mean?" I knew what he was going to say.
"Steph, he left
Texas this morning… AND… before you ask, I don’t know where he’s going. But I
can tell you he won’t make the same mistake twice. He won’t be found this
time."
Shit. If Tank was
right about anything, he was right about that. I took the envelope from Tank
with a shaky hand, and opened it.
Stephanie,
By now you know
that Morelli found me in Texas. When you read this I’ll be gone. I just need
more time. There are things going on you don’t understand.
R
For some reason I
didn’t feel like crying. I thought for sure I’d blubber all over. I don’t even
feel angry. What I do feel is more determined. I handed the letter to Tank, and
let him read it.
"Explain to me
what I don’t understand." Tank must have sensed my determination, because
his features suddenly became panicked. He didn’t say a word.
"Fine," I
said. "Keep it to your self." I stood.
"That," I
said and pointed to the letter, "isn’t going to stop me."
"Bombshell…"
he started.
"No Tank. I
don’t want to hear it." I grabbed my purse and keys as I started for the
door. "Ranger told me once that if you apply pressure to the right places,
things start to break down. I didn’t realize then, but that’s what he had been
doing for two years. I didn’t understand it until that night at the apartment
when I thought we…" I didn’t want to finish that thought. "It’s time I
started to apply some pressure. Lock up when you leave."
I left a stunned
Tank standing in my living room.
*******************************
I pulled up to the
gate. It took me an hour longer than I had planned to get here, because I kept
turning around to go back home. I was just about to back out of the drive, when
a voice came out of a speaker box.
"Name."
It wasn’t a question.
"Stephanie
Plum." I waited…and waited. About 5 minutes later, the box spoke again.
"Continue up
the drive and stop at the door. Someone will be out to greet you." I heard
a buzzing sound, and the gate started to swing open. I took a deep breath and
pulled through. The minute I cleared the gate, it closed behind me. No turning
back now.
Sure enough, just
like the box said, when I got to the door there was someone there to greet me.
"Miss Plum.
This way please." I followed the older man into the house. This house was
huge. The entryway could fit my entire apartment. Hell, maybe even my entire
floor. Now I was really nervous because I was afraid I might break something.
The older man led
me over to a set of doors. He opened them and ushered me in. I jumped when he
spoke next.
"Miss Plum to
see you, sir." He didn’t wait for a response, just nodded toward the back
of a chair sitting behind the desk, then left, closing the door behind him.
Someone was in the chair, I hoped. It was one of those tall back leather office
chairs. I couldn’t see around the sides.
The chair started
to slowly turn, to reveal the man, I prayed, would help me find Ranger.
The
Chase - Chapter 6

I
could not ask for more than this time with you
Every

I Could Not Ask For More - By Edwin McCain
I
surveyed my travel companions - four, really, really, REALLY big guys. One of them could even give Tank a run for
his money. A small shiver went through
me at the thought. What the hell am I
doing? This is not time to get scared. Once again I put myself in a situation where
there was no turning back.
I
snuggled into my seat and thought back to how I ended up on a plane, with 4
huge guys, flying across the country.
The
man turned around in his chair to face me.
“Hey Cutie, it’s been a long time.”
He flashed a huge, genuine, white smile. “Did you finally come to tell me you want to get married?” Oh
boy.
“No,
Mr. Ramos…”
He
raised his hand to stop me. “Cutie, call me Alexander.”
“Umm…Ok,
Alexander, the reason I’m here is, well, I was hoping you could help me with a
problem I’m having.” His eyebrows went
to the top of his head. He was
surprised to say the least.
“You’re
involved with getting my son killed, and you want me to help you?” Damn. I was hoping he would have forgotten about
that.
“Well…I
…umm…I…” I’m so versed in the English language sometimes it scares me.
Alexander
started to laugh. “It’s ok Cutie. I told
you before, that son of mine was worthless. Nothing between the ears.” He made a gesture across his face with his
hands. “So, what’s your problem?”
“ I
need help finding someone.” He kept
looking at me, so I guess he wanted me to continue. “A friend of mine…is missing…well, really he…left…and I need to
find him.”
“What
is your friends name?” I don’t know why
I thought I could get around this question.
I guess I wasn’t thinking.
“Ricardo
Carlos Manoso” I held my breath, and then let it out in a whoosh, “Ranger.”
He
did that eyebrow thing to the top of his head again, but then I noticed his
face turned a little dark. Uh oh. “You
want me to help you find Ranger? What
for?”
“I
need to talk to him.” Well, I had to
try.
“About?” Damn. It didn’t work. No avoiding.
“Ok,”
I took a deep breath. “Ranger and I had a misunderstanding, and now I need to
talk to him to straighten it out.”
He
smiled an evil little grin. “Come on, Cutie…out with it. I just bet this is going to be good.”
I
rolled my eyes and spilled my guts. I
told him the same story I told Joe, the whole thing from beginning to end. Why try and hide anything now?
When
I was finished, Alexander sat quietly and studied me for several long
minutes. “I’m a business man Cutie,
what’s in it for me?” he grinned.
This
I was ready for. I reached into my
pocketbook and took out the small package.
I stood, walked over to the desk, and laid it in front of him. He burst out laughing. “Cutie, you’ve got yourself a deal.” We smiled at each other as Alexander picked
up the pack of cigarettes, and started to open them.
How
a pack of cigarettes landed me an all expense paid trip to Montecito, CA., I’ll
never truly understand, but Alexander had said he’d find him, even on what
little information I had. Sure enough,
he did. When he told me how, I couldn’t
stop laughing, and within two days I was on my way.
***************************
We
landed in Santa Barbara at around 4:00 p.m.
The really big goon rented us an Excursion, I mean, what else do 4
really big men drive, and we all settled in to head south.
I
must have drifted off, because before I knew it, Really Big Goon what gently
shaking my shoulder.
“Miss
Plum, we are here.”
I sat
up in my seat and looked around. In
front of me was a small seaside house that looked gray and weathered by time
and environment. Parked next to the
house was a black BMW.
“Uh,
ok. Thanks,” was my lame reply. I had a problem, I didn’t want Really Big
Goon to figure out I had no idea what to do next.
*****************************
Maxie
and I were quietly sitting on the beach. We had just finished up our daily run
and swim when she started to run, full throttle, back up to the house.
“Maxie? Maxie!” I yelled after her. She was having no part of it. Usually I only have to tell her once and she
obeys. Hmmm. The one thing I learned
quickly about this dog is that she has good instincts. It’s almost like she’s always on alert, I
snorted… just like me. Shaking my head
in disbelief, I started toward the house cautiously.
Maxie
had headed around to the front of the house.
I followed her around and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw who was
sitting on my front steps. Before I
could say anything, two big guys got out of an SUV. I pulled my gun. “Stop
right there.”
They
stopped in mid step. I could tell they
were professionals, so I was shocked to see them look at the person on my steps
for instruction.
“It’s
ok fellas. The only thing you need to
remember, is that he,” she said as she pointed to me, “doesn’t leave this
house.” My eyes got wide at what Steph
had just said. She gave a small laugh
when she caught sight of me. “Oh, and
if he does try to leave, don’t hurt him.”
The big guys nodded and went to stand guard.
*********************************
I
had to laugh at the look on Ranger’s face.
Not only was he surprised to see me sitting on his steps, but then to
watch me order two big muscle heads around?
His look was priceless.
“What’s
going on Stephanie?” He seemed a little
wary. I guess I can’t blame him.
I
stood. “Can we go inside and talk?” He
nodded his head slowly. I turned to go
in when I had a thought. “There’s a few
more of them,” I said as I motioned in the goon’s direction, “wandering around
here. So don’t try anything.” I flashed
him a huge grin.
The
Chase - Chapter 7
I
plopped myself on the couch in the small house. It really was very cute.
Just one level and the rooms looked to be small, but very cozy.
“What’s
going on Stephanie?” He asked. He looked as serious as I’ve ever seen him. Looked like Babe is gone again too. I can
only hope she’s not gone for good. “How did you find me? What are you doing here?”
I
studied him before I answered. He looked
good, reeeaally good. His mocha latte
skin was a bit darker, I guess due to all the time at the beach. Ranger’s long silky hair was tied back, but
wet. He must have been swimming. Hmmm…a
wet Ranger…Hold on! I need to
focus. Nympho mode is not why I’m
here. Well, I hoping for maybe later,
but right now, the man in front of me is not very happy.
“Answer
me Stephanie,” he said through clenched teeth.
Wow. He did not like the fact I was able to find him.
“Ranger,
what’s going on, is that I’m here to talk to you. You wouldn’t come to me, so I came to you. As you can also see, I’ve taken precautions
to assure that you can’t run from me again.”
Just as those words came out of my mouth I had a thought. I stood and quickly walked back out to the front
porch. Ranger was right on my heels.
“Oh,
hey,” I yelled at Really Big Goon. “Hey, you, big guy.” Really Big Goon finally caught on and walked
over.
“My
name is Patrick Riley, Miss Plum.
Please call me Patrick or Pat”
“Oh,”
I smiled, “Pat, I wanted to also tell you, while no one can leave, no one else
came get in either. I don’t want any of
Mr. Manoso’s friends to try and…umm…rescue him.” He nodded and turned to leave. “Wait! Pat.
And…uhh…don’t hurt any of them either, ok?” I looked at my feet. I knew I was making their job difficult with
the direction I was giving.
I
looked up when I heard a small chuckle.
It was Pat. Great, now mob goons
think I’m funny too.
“No
problem, Miss Plum,” he said with a huge grin.
I think he also realized he might need more then the four of them. He got out his phone as he walked away. I have a feeling we might just be having a
real party by the time the night is over.
I
turned back to an astonished Ranger.
“Shall we go back in?” I brushed
past him and went back to my position on the couch.
“Let’s
see, where was I?” I paused. “Oh
yes! I just covered what’s going on and
why I’m here. That leaves how I found
you. You should probably sit and let me
finish before you ask questions ok?” I motioned to a chair near him and he
nodded.
As
he sat in the chair, I noticed his looked turned from anger to just plain
curiosity. I took a deep breath… here
goes nothing.
“I’ve
been trying to find you for the past two weeks. The night after you…left, Tank convinced me that you needed some
time. After three weeks of waiting for
you to come back, I decided you had enough time, and I started to look for
you.” He raised his eyebrow at that.
“Tank wasn’t being very cooperative, so I had to find my own ways of getting to
you.” This whole time I was looking him
straight in the eye. I think it kind of
took him back at bit. If he thought I
was going to be shy or coy about what I needed to do and say, he was wrong. He
has no idea the amount of determination he is up against.
“I
went to Joe first.” I snorted. “Some help he turned out to be. He found you then didn’t tell me until you
had taken off again. But I’m still
touched he agreed to help in the first place, seeing as how…” I let that die
right there. No need to bring all that
up right now.
“Anyway,
when Joe took off to go see you, which I didn’t know, I got tired of waiting
again.” He gave a small snorted laugh
with his mouth in a half smile. I
ignored the look. “So I went to Randy Briggs.
He gave me crap, and now I owe him some money, but he found you in
Corpus the same way Joe did, through Police records. That cop, Baker? He wasn’t shy about digging around.”
“I
was all set to fly to Texas when Tank gave me the letter. I read it and told him
that wasn’t going to stop me. So, I
went to the next person I knew who could help me with everything I needed to
do.” I paused to steel myself against
his possible reaction to my next words.
“I
went to Alexander Ramos.” I stopped and
narrowed my eyes, trying to find any hint of what he was thinking. All I got was a look of total surprise, but
he kept quiet. “Alexander agreed to help me with whatever I needed. First, of course was to find you, then to
get me to where ever you were, and lastly, figure out how to keep you from
running before we could talk. So here I
am. We flew out on Alexander’s private
jet, gave me some money, and loaned me four of his goons to keep you in
line.” I smiled triumphantly.
He
was quiet for several minutes. “Are you done?” he finally asked. I nodded slowly. Here it comes.
“What
did you have to do to get Ramos to help you?”
Oh, I didn’t expect that to be the first question. And, I think I saw concern in his eyes when
he asked it. This could be a good sign that he still cares.
“I
paid him.” Well, I did, just not with money.
“You
don’t have any money. How did you pay him?”
I
rolled my eyes. “If you must know…with a pack of cigarettes.”
Ranger’s
look went from utter surprise to a beautiful smile and laugh. It made my heart ache. I missed him so much.
Shaking
his head he said, “Babe, you never disappoint.” I froze and my heart thumped.
He called me Babe. I can’t get
my hopes up too high, that comment might have been just out of habit. I think he sensed the panic and reluctant
hope because his features changed again, but this time they were sad. Shit.
“How
did Ramos find me?”
The
answer to this question was easy, and fun to tell.
*********************************
I
hung up the phone in disbelief. Then I
started to laugh. I just couldn’t help
myself. I’ve been around this business
a long time, and thought that not many people could surprise me anymore. Boy, was I wrong.
I
picked up the phone and dialed.
“Yeah?”
“Lester…get
packed. We’re headed to California. Meet you in 30.”
“What?
Tank? What the hell….” I hung up. He’d find out soon enough. I’d explain it on the plane.
***************************************
I knew Ranger wasn’t in the mood to kid
around so I kept it short and sweet.
“Ramos
couldn’t find you at first. I told him
about Texas, and what other little information I had. He called me two days later and said he was coming up blank, and
was there anything, any smallest detail, I could tell him. Then I remember something Joe told me. I told Alexander what it was, and within 3
hours he had you pegged.”
He
sat patiently but I wanted to make this dramatic, so I waited him out.
“What
was it that Morelli told you, Stephanie?”
“Well,
he didn’t know you were traveling under the name Manny Carlos. But…Manny Carlos and his dog Maxie…” I
trailed off to let it sink in.
Ranger’s
eyes got big as he stared at me. He
blinked once and then looked down at Maxie by his feet. She noticed his shift in attention and sat up
with tongue out and tail wagging.
Ranger
started to laugh, big huge belly laughs.
He leaned down to pet the dog.
She was so excited she jumped in his lap and started to lick his face. Ranger was rubbing the dog’s head and
laughing the whole time. It was nice to
watch.
Once
Ranger and Maxie started to calm down, he studied me with a very intense
stare. It was like he was looking at me
for the first time. I started to fidget
and feel uncomfortable. I’m sure he
noticed.
“You
hungry?” he asked. Before I could even
answer he stood. “Come on, I’ll fix dinner.”
“You
have enough for the guys outside?” I asked sheepishly.
Ranger
stopped and turned back to me. “How many are there?”
I knew
what he was doing, and I knew I shouldn’t tell, but I had a feeling he wasn’t
going anywhere. “I probably shouldn’t tell you…”
“You’re
right you shouldn’t.”
“…there
are 4 guys.” He studied me again, then
just nodded, and went into the kitchen.
Ranger
whipped up some stir fried pork with fried rice. It smelled wonderful, and there was enough to feed an army. He handed me some paper plates and utensils,
then grabbed a huge bowl of the stuff, and we headed out to see Pat.
Ranger
and I ate in relative silence. We were
both avoiding what we knew needed to happen.
I’m just glad we were able to eat first. I was helping to clean up when Pat knocked on the door.
“Thank
you Miss Plum, Mr. Manoso. It was nice
of you to feed me and the guys.”
Handing us the empty bowl, he nodded at us and went back outside. Ranger and I continued cleaning up in
absolute quiet.
I
was putting away the last dish when I decided I’ve had the lead so far, might
as well keep going.
“Can
we talk about what happened? What’s been
happening the past two weeks?”
Ranger
had been wiping down the table when I asked to talk. He stood, threw the sponge in the sink and motioned to the living
room. “Let’s go sit down.”
We
both took up our earlier positions, me on the couch and Ranger in the chair
with Maxie at his feet.
“Talk.”
I
could feel the bubbles of anger start small in my stomach. I took a deep breath. I needed to stay calm.
“I
will talk Ranger, as soon as you explain why you left.” This time I had to fight to maintain eye
contact. I wanted so much to look away,
but too much was at stake I couldn’t back down now. I wanted this man…no, loved this man too much to hide.
“Tell
me what happened at Bobby’s.” It wasn’t
a question.
I
sighed and steadied myself. “I explained
all that the night you left. My date
with Bobby was a one-night thing, and nothing happened for me to feel ashamed
or guilty about. I take it you don’t
believe me.” Mine wasn’t a question
either. I guess it was dawning on me
that maybe he didn’t really trust me. I
let my head sag.
“It’s
not you I doubt or don’t trust.”
My
head snapped up at the comment. “You don’t trust Bobby? How can that be? You trust him with your life everyday.” I didn’t understand. Duh,
that’s part of the problem.
“I trust
him to watch my back. I don’t trust him with the lives of the women I love.”
Huh?
What? Women? Love? Am I on that
list? I narrowed my eyes at him.
“Yes,
you’re on that list.” Mr. ESP strikes again.
“Bobby
would never physically hurt me Ranger. I know that as sure as I know you would
never hurt me.” I saw pain flash
through Ranger’s eyes.
“Please
Stephanie, tell me what happened that night.”
Those anger bubbles weren’t getting any smaller. I closed my eyes, but
it didn’t help.
“No.”
Maybe he would understand that sentence.
He
stood quickly. “Damn-it Stephanie, I need to know. What the hell happened that you won’t tell me?” He had raised his voice by the end. This only fed the bubbling anger and brought
me to my feet.
“You
don’t get it do you?” I felt the heat
rise inside me. “You...you muscle bound airhead. It’s not anything that happened as to why I won’t tell you, it’s
because it’s none of your damn business!!” Ok I was yelling now too.
He
moved in very close to me. Uh oh. Would
Pat let him send me to a third world country?
That was never in my instructions.
In
a very low voice Ranger said, “I think it’s my business, when my woman goes on
a date with another guy.”
Oh,
that did it. His woman? His…woman!
“Your
woman? Your woman!! NO MAN OWNS ME AND
THAT INCLUDES YOU RICARDO MANOSO.” I
was full out screaming by this time. I started with the finger poking
again. I needed to stop that. It hurt my finger. “YOU’RE the one who left
my bedroom that night. YOU’RE the one
who said you didn’t have to leave but chose to. YOU’RE the one who had his
hands up my skirt one minute and then walked out the next!”
I
saw nothing but fire in Ranger’s eyes. In an even creepier voice, he said,
“You’re the one who obviously has something to hide.” If I thought I was angry before, I’m not sure what I was
now. One thing was certain, whatever it
was, it was aimed straight at the man in front of me.
“You
don’t trust me! You don’t fucking trust
me!! You think I slept with Bobby! You over grown baboon!” Did I just call the
sexiest man alive a baboon?
I
side stepped Ranger and headed for the front door. If he wanted to be alone to
sulk with his own stupid thoughts, then let him. I opened the front door and
ran into a wall. The wall’s name was
Pat.
“Let’s
go Pat. I’m through here.” He didn’t move. “Pat, move it. I’ve had enough muscle head problems tonight, so
get out of my way.” I should really be
nice to Pat since he’s my ride.
“I…
I can’t Miss Plum.” Huh? If he thought what he heard between me and
Ranger was bad, he wasn’t going to know what hit him in about 2 seconds.
Before
I could let loose, he gently pushed me back inside the room. “I’m under orders
from Mr. Ramos that you are not to leave the house unless you and Mr. Manoso
are on good terms. From what I just
heard, that’s not the case.” He shut
the front door, turned to face front and stood blocking the doorway. Before I could even turn around, the back
door was shut and there was someone standing in front of it too. I went to a window on the side of the house.
Yep, two goons on this side, and I just bet two goons on the other.
I
turned to Ranger who was standing with his fists clenched. “Give me your
gun.” I had my own low menacing voice
going now.
He
looked at me. “No.” Then he turned,
went into the bedroom and shut the door.
With
nowhere else to go, I stomped into the bathroom and yelled, “FUCK,” as I
slammed the door.
The
Chase - Chapter 8
“Old
man Ramos did what?” Lester exclaimed.
“He
called me and said that our friends Ricardo and Stephanie were in
California. He’s done about all he can
to get them together, and thought that we might be able to help the situation.”
“Man,
this is going to be good.”
“We’ll
find out in about two hours.”
***************************************
I
cried about as much as I could, stuck in the bathroom. I felt like I needed a shower. Good thing Ranger chose the bedroom…I
guess. I quietly opened the door and
the kitchen was empty. I discovered the
living room was empty too, and the door to the bedroom was still closed. I noticed my small overnight bag sitting by
the front door. Pat must have brought
it in from the car. There was no goon, that I could see, in front of the
door. I wasn’t in the mood for an
adventure, so I grabbed my bag and made for the shower.
The
shower felt good, but instead of refreshing me, it relaxed me so much, I could
barely stay awake. I made it to the
couch just in time to collapse and fall soundly into sleep. I vaguely sensed someone placing a blanket
over me.
I
awoke to shaking. Now, I know Trenton
didn’t have earthquakes. California
did. My eyes flew open, only to be met
by two dark brown one staring back. “For god’s sake Tank, why can’t you wake me
gently, huh? Do you have to shake me awake?”
“Bombshell,
you just let me know what kind of wake up call you need, and I’ll be very happy
to accommodate you.” His eyebrows
bobbed up and down. Don’t these guys
ever quit?
“Wipe
that damn wolf grin off your face. I’ve
got enough problems with empty-headed muscle heads. Don’t add yourself to the list.”
I sat up and pushed him off me.
I must have caught him off guard because he fell to the floor in a loud
thump. This brought Lester’s head
around the corner.
“Geez
Beautiful, take it easy on him, huh?” I
rolled my eyes and looked out the window.
Daylight. It was morning.
Wait. “How the hell do you two get here?” I jumped
off the couch like I had been bitten.
“How
did you know where we were?”
“Well
Bombshell, you stumped old man Ramos.” Tank laughed and moved into the kitchen
and I followed. “He had no idea what to
do with you two when you started fighting.
He called in reinforcements.” I
wanted to slap the grin right off Tank’s face.
Well shit.
Lester
came over and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
It didn’t lighten my mood any.
“Four’s
a crowd guys. Beat it.” I scowled.
“She’s
right.” We all spun around to see Ranger in the kitchen doorway. “Everyone can leave. I’m out of here too.” I saw Lester and Tank tense. Uh oh.
“Ric…” Tank stopped. I think he was having second thoughts. He looked at Lester.
Lester nodded, I think, in encouragement. “Ric, you can’t leave.” Ranger looked surprised. Tank pushed
on. “We’re not here to take you
away. We…are, uh…here to help Ramos’
men.”
Ranger’s
face started to look grim. That didn’t get by Tank and Lester. They both took a
step back.
“Ric,
you love her,” Tank threw a look in my direction, “you’re just too damn suborn
to listen to what she has to say.” He hurried
on when it looked like Ranger might say something. “Old man Ramos called us and
told us what was happening. We flew
out and one of his men brought us here.
We aren’t going to let either of you leave, anymore then his men
were. They were just too afraid to come
in the house.” Tank smiled then. “But since Lester and I care about both of
you, we decided it was worth the risk to our health to come in, and talk some
sense in to you two.”
Ranger
took a step in Tank’s direction with a look that could kill. I gave Tank a hell of a lot of credit for
not moving or even flinching. He stood
his ground. Although what Tank said
next, sounded like it might get him killed.
“You
need to tell her about Monica.” No one
moved for a full minute. It was the weirdest
thing. Like suspended animation or
something. We really could have heard a
pin drop.
Ranger
finally took another step toward Tank.
This time, the rage in Ranger’s eyes would have had most grown men
wetting their pants. Tank never moved. You know the saying; don’t look an angry
animal in the eyes. I guess Tank never
has. He was giving Ranger as good as he
got. “You need to tell her about Monica
and Bobby. If you don’t, right now, I
will.”
I
saw Ranger fist his hands. Lester must
have too, because he moved from behind me to right behind Ranger. I guess to try and hold him back if he went
for Tank. This was spiraling out of
control. I had better do something
before the punches started to fly.
“Who
is Monica?” All three men started. I think they forgot I was there.
I walked around to stand between Ranger and
Tank. I faced Ranger, put my hands on
his chest, and asked my question again. “Who is Monica?” I was watching Ranger’s eyes. They seemed to drain of all anger and
energy. He suddenly looked very, very
tired. His head sagged to look down at
the floor.
I
heard Tank start to move his arms. “No Tank.
I’m ok. Ranger would never hurt me.”
Ranger looked up to meet my eyes.
“Can you and Lester wait outside please?” I asked. Lester and Tank
seemed to hesitate, but finally went for the back door.
Before
going out, Tank stopped and turned back toward us. “And you Bombshell…I
understand your need for privacy and admire your determination to stand up for
it. But we all have to learn to choose
our battles wisely. Is keeping that one night private worth losing him?” Tank turned and walked out the door.
Ranger
and I stood there for what seemed like hours just staring into each other’s
eyes. He looked exhausted. I grabbed
his hand. He jumped at the touch and
looked down our entwined fingers. I
tugged slightly to let him know I wanted him to follow me.
I
led him into the bedroom and got into bed.
I pulled at his hand again and he finally lay down with his back to
me. “Get some sleep. We’ll talk when
you wake up,” I said to his gorgeous back.
He rolled over and looked at me, then swept some hair out of my face.
The look on his face brought tears to my eyes.
He looked sad and lost. Then he
rolled back over and settled in. My mind
started to think before I could fall asleep.
Tank
had asked a really good question. Was
what happened between Bobby and me that night really worth losing Ranger? No.
I guess I was fighting more for the principle, and never stopped to see
if the events of that night were worth the fight. Mental head slap. No wonder Ranger doubted me. I was fighting to keep something private
that didn’t really need to be kept private. I felt like a weight had been
lifted.
I
drifted off, able to sleep, after my revelation.
I
woke up hours later, to the most wonderful smell. If memory serves, the last time this happened Tank and Lester had
cooked me an awesome dinner.
I
tried to get out of bed only to have Ranger’s arm tighten around me. I remembered waking up once and found myself
spooning Ranger. I had let go, and
rolled back over, because I didn’t want him to find me like that. Not that I didn’t like it, but, I don’t
know, we just weren’t that far yet. I guess he held no similar notion. He was pressed right up against my back.
I
lay still and absorbed the feel of Ranger’s body holding mine. I felt so warm and safe. I involuntarily
snuggled back into him. I felt, rather
then heard, a rumble in his chest. I immediately tensed.
“Shhh
Babe, relax” he whispered in my ear. And I did. I couldn’t help it. He
was holding me so close. He felt comfortable and warm…he called me Babe. I
sighed and let my body totally relax back into his. His arms tightened. We lay like that for a few minutes. I think, both of us, trying to avoid what
was beyond that door. The argument and
the words still hung in the air out there.
In here, we created a safe place.
I
enjoyed the moment as long as I could before my stomach got involved. I think it could have been heard growling in
the next state over. I felt Ranger sigh
against my ear. Then I felt his lips
curve up into a smile. “Come on. Let’s
go see what the guys made for us to eat. Then I’ll tell you about Monica.”
The
Chase - Chapter 9
I couldn’t
believe it. I woke up with Stephanie in
my arms. I felt her start to get up and I just didn’t want to let go. I tightened my grip.
“Shhh
Babe, relax,” I said. I just couldn’t
let go of her yet. I was bracing for a
struggle when she surprised me and just went limp in my arms. It felt too good to be true.
I
know I need to tell her about Monica, but shit, where do I start? I closed my
eyes and just lay still, taking in the feeling of Steph, her scent…her
everything. This felt so right that I couldn’t give up on it now.
But
once I work this out with Steph, I still have to deal with Bobby. I can’t think about that now. I need to get back on track with Stephanie
first. I was stupid to leave, to run.
How did I ever think that would be best? She needs to understand why I was so upset.
I
heard Steph’s stomach protest our situation. I let out a big sigh. There’s no
getting between this woman and food. I
couldn’t help but smile. I whispered in
her ear, “Come on. Let’s go see what the guys made for us to eat. Then I’ll tell you about Monica.”
Reluctantly, I let her go.
***********************************
Did
I just hear Ranger say he was going to tell me about Monica? We rolled out of bed and headed for the
kitchen. I smiled at Tank and Lester,
and then made a beeline for the bathroom.
I’m sure they needed to talk and I really had to pee.
When
I came out, Ranger was the only one left in the kitchen and he was standing
over the stove. Looks like he was
finishing up whatever the guys had started.
“Smells
good,” I said motioning toward where Ranger was standing.
“Yeah,
Tank and Lester were making us some baked fish.” He turned and went to dig
something out of the refrigerator. “It’s ready to eat. Go ahead and sit
down.” Ranger proceeded to dish out our
dinner. Damn it was good. These guys
really knew how to cook. Where on earth
did they learn?
“In
the Army.” ESP man strikes again.
The
rest of dinner was completed in a slightly uncomfortable silence. It wasn’t unbearable, but we both knew what
was coming. I was finished before Ranger and had even managed to keep my moans
to myself. I stood and started to clear
some of the dishes.
A
thought struck me and I spun around to face Ranger. “What about all the guys?
Did they eat?”
“Lester
and Tank ate while we slept. Ramos’ men left earlier,” he replied without any
expression. I, on the other hand, had
plenty of expressions.
“Left? What do you mean ‘left’?” I tried to keep the surprise and panic out
of my voice, but I failed miserably.
Ranger
stood and brought his empty plate over to where I was at the sink. “Yes, left,”
he placed his dish in the sink, and then turned to clear the rest of the table.
“You don’t need to worry. I’m not leaving. Oh…and Tank said that one of Ramos’
men left you something. It’s in the
front room.”
Wait
until I call Alexander. Pat’s going to
be in deep shit. Left? Damn.
I’m sure Tank and Lester could keep Ranger here, but I would feel more
confident if the other goons were around to help… just in case.
I
spotted an envelope on one of the end tables.
It read Miss Plum. Guess that’s
for me.
Miss
Plum,
Since
it seems that your friends have everything under control, I called and
suggested to Mr. Ramos that it would be ok for us to leave. He agreed.
Ordinarily,
we don’t leave anything behind, but the other men wanted me to let you know
they appreciated your kindness. This
assignment has been one of the best we’ve ever had.
I’ve
included a card with our initials and numbers.
If you ever need anything, please don’t hesitate to call any one of us.
Please don’t share this information with anyone.
Regards,
P.R.
I
felt Ranger come up behind me. I folded
the letter and put it, with the business card, in my pocket.
“What
did he leave?” Ranger asked.
“Just
a note to say thanks.” I said as I walked over and sat on the sofa.
Ranger
stood and shook his head while a smile played on his lips. “Only you…only you
could get mob goons to leave a thank you note.” He was out right chuckling now. “You never disappoint.” The minute those words left his mouth, I
tensed. I did disappoint. That’s what we needed to talk about.
Of
course, Ranger noticed the change in me immediately. He strode over to the couch and kneeled in front of me. “You didn’t disappoint me, Babe.” I closed my eyes and held my breath.
“Look
at me, Stephanie.” He grabbed my hands
and gently squeezed them. I opened my
eyes wide, but still held my breath. “You can breathe too.” He lifted his right hand to the side of my
face. His touch startled me and I
gulped in air.
“Ranger,
I did…”
“No,
you didn’t. You scared me.” He dropped
his face toward the floor, his hand left my face and he settled back on his
heels. “You didn’t disappoint me. You
scared me. I thought I had lost you.”
He was speaking so softly I could barely hear him.
I
started to slide off the couch to my knees.
Ranger moved back to accommodate me. Kneeling there in front of each
other, I felt a huge wave of deja vu wash over me. Isn’t this where things went wrong before?
Ranger
must have felt my apprehension. He
stood, took my hand and pulled me up with him, then led me out the back door to
the beach. We walked along quietly for
a bit, just strolling hand in hand.
By
now it was dark outside, but the moonlight bouncing off the water gave enough
light to see by. I stopped and pulled on Ranger’s hand to make him stop too.
“We
can’t put this off any longer.” I let go of his hand and sat in the sand. Ranger turned and sat directly in front of
me, but about two feet away.
“You
said you were scared and thought you had lost me. Ranger, I told you it was a one-night thing. You didn’t believe
me?”
He
shook his head. “No, it wasn’t you I didn’t believe or didn’t trust.”
“But
it was me you ran from. I’m the one you
accused of having something to hide.” I paused and looked down at the sand.
“You’re the one who ran this time, not me.”
We were both quiet for a few minutes.
I
was startled at the sound of Ranger’s intake of breath as he started to talk.
“Stephanie, if it had been anyone else, I wouldn’t have run. I wouldn’t have doubted. I know you’ve never
lied to me and up until the moment I heard that it was Bobby…” he trailed off.
“This
isn’t coming out right. There are
things between myself and Bobby that you don’t know about.”
“Then
tell me,” I requested.
He
sighed, and looked as if he were about to step out into the great unknown and
might never come back.
“I
lost someone else that I loved dearly, because of Bobby.”
The
Chase - Chapter 10
When you are with me
I’m free…I’m careless…I
believe
Above all the others we’ll
fly
This brings tears to my eyes
My
Sacrifice - Creed
I
couldn’t believe my ears. He had lost another love to Bobby? I was starting to
get pissed. Bobby had to have known…and he still did all those things…when he
knew…I couldn’t wrap my brain around this yet.
“Steph,
Bobby was involved with my younger sister, Monica. We were very close. Growing
up together, we only had each other.” He took deep breath before he continued.
“Bobby met Monica while we were in the Rangers together. They were headed for
marriage. Once we were out and I had started
Rangeman, Bobby bought a ring. He showed it to me the day before…” He stopped.
I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was reliving a memory. “…the day
before she died.”
One
tear ran down Ranger’s cheek. Staring out to the sea, he continued. “I had sent
Bobby out on an errand. I didn’t know it, but he had stopped and picked up
Monica. It wasn’t anything dangerous, he was just going to get some supplies.
They were sitting at a light, and when it turned green Bobby started across the
intersection. A truck plowed right into the passenger side of the car. Monica
was killed instantly, but Bobby didn’t know that. He was trapped in the driver’s
seat. I think he still believes he sat there and watched her die.” He wiped his
face with the back of his hand, stood and walked toward the water.
“If
he hadn’t picked her up and done what I told him, she’d still be alive!” I got
the feeling this is something he just said out loud for the first time. I stood
and walked up behind him. He spun around and grabbed me by the arms.
“Don’t
you understand?” he yelled at me. “He took Monica from me and now he’s trying
to take you!” He was angry, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared. I was.
He must have seen the fear in my eyes, because his eyes suddenly got wider.
Then he quickly drew me into his arms and hugged me tightly. “Oh god,
Steph…don’t be scared. I’m sorry.”
I
tried to pull back, but his grip was too tight. “Ranger…Ranger.” Finally he got
the hint and let me go. I stepped back quickly.
Then
I looked into those beautiful dark eyes and saw all the hurt, pain, and
uncertainty. I put my hands flat on his chest and took a step closer. “Ranger,
I’m ok. I was just startled for a second. You didn’t hurt me.” His face relaxed
a fraction.
“Ranger…”
I started slowly. I didn’t want to continue until I had caught his eyes. “Bobby
wasn’t responsible for Monica’s death.” I narrowed my eyes to make sure he got
my point. He didn’t.
He
pushed me back and stormed away a few paces. “If he had just gone and got the
supplies she’d still be alive. She had no business being there!” This was said
through clenched teeth.
I
had to keep pushing. If we didn’t get him past this, I don’t think there could
be an ‘us’. Ranger would always think Bobby was trying to take me, when he
wasn’t. Now I understood more about Ranger’s reaction to my ‘date’, and more
about why Bobby needed the date to begin with.
Bobby
was not responsible and Ranger had to come to understand that.
I
figured since Ranger was on a somewhat controlled boil, I could be too.
Probably not my best idea, but the only one I had at the moment, so I went with
it.
“If
Bobby had only done what you said. Let’s keep going backward with that logic
shall we?” I waited only a second before continuing. In that instant Ranger and
turned to face me as I walked straight up him and got in his face.
“If
only Bobby hadn’t fallen for Monica. If only Bobby hadn’t met Monica. If only
you and Bobby hadn’t met at all.” His gaze was burning holes right through me.
He was trying to intimidate me and it wasn’t going to work. Not when something
so important to me was at stake.
“If
only I hadn’t been laid off. If only I hadn’t divorced Dickie. If only I hadn’t
married Dickie…” I trailed off. I think he was getting the idea. “Then guess
what? I might never have met you.”
“If
only,” I stared to poke him with my index finger, “…we could ‘if only’
ourselves into the next galaxy and it wouldn’t make a damn bit of difference.”
I was on a roll now. “The facts are that you met Bobby, he met and fell in love
with your sister, they were in a tragic accident and she was killed. And yes,
while sad and painful, it was an accident! You’re damn lucky you didn’t lose
both of them!!” I was yelling at this point. I couldn’t help it. He was holding
on to something that wasn’t doing anyone any good.
I
could swear Ranger’s eyes were burning red. He took two steps back, never
breaking eye contact. He studied me with that look in his eyes. Then he turned
away and started to walk away from me.
I
started after him. I had to run to keep up. Well, this wasn’t going to work. I
stopped to catch my breath.
Finally
I screamed, “RANGER! Don’t think for one fucking
minute that you can run from me again! I found you this time! I can find you
again!!” I knew that really wasn’t true. I got lucky this time because of
Maxie, but it sounded good.
He
kept going. Damn!
“RANGER!!
Damn you! You keep going and I might
not look for you again. Then you can
live with the fact you ran from me.
Then we’ll both know who is the real coward!!”
That
did it. The ‘c’ word stopped him cold. Yippee for me! I think.
He
didn’t turn around. He didn’t move. Guess I was going to catch up to him, so I
did.
Huffing
and puffing, I went around front to face him. His eyes were closed and his
fists were clenched, as he stood motionless. There weren’t too many things I
was certain of in life, but one thing I knew for sure, I was not giving up.
I
took a step closer and lightly placed my hands on his chest, followed by
leaning my head against him as well. He still didn’t move. I pressed my ear to
him and heard his heart beating. It was going a little fast, but not pounding
out of his chest. I think he was calming down.
I
slid my hands around his waist. We stood there, me holding him, while I
listened to his heartbeat slow down. Eventually I felt him release some of the
tension in his shoulders and arms.
“You
said you wouldn’t leave,” I mumbled into his chest and hugged him tighter. I
felt all the tension leave his body as he leaned into me and brought his arms
around my shoulders.
“Oh
god Babe, I’m sorry. I wasn’t leaving. I just needed to move.” He held me
tighter. “I’m not ever leaving you again. I should never have left the first
time, “ he said as he buried his head in my hair and neck.
“Ranger?”
“Hmmm,”
he responded while nuzzling my neck.
“Does
this mean Babe is back?”
He
brought his hands up to cup my jaw and leaned his forehead against mine. “God,
I’ve been such an ass.” Still holding my face, he lifted his head to look me in
the eyes. “Babe never left. I’m very sorry if I led you to believe she had.”
He
was staring at my lips. He started to lean in, and as much as I wanted him to
kiss me, we weren’t finished yet.
“Ranger?”
That didn’t stop him. I removed his hands from my face and took a step back.
Now he looked confused. He wasn’t alone. All of my hormones wanted to know what
the hell was going on as well. “We have a few more things to discuss.”
He
nodded, somewhat reluctantly it looked like, and we both sat facing each other.
“First,”
I said grabbing his hand in mine, “I want to thank you for trusting me enough
to finally tell me about Monica. I know that wasn’t easy for you to do.” I
paused because I needed to word my next thoughts very carefully. We had to get
past this to move on. “I also know that you’re a very smart man, who, I just
learned, feels very deeply. I believe you know, deep down, that Bobby is not to
blame for Monica’s death.” I felt him tense but didn’t let go of his hand.
“Blame the guy who ran the light. Blame God. But you know Bobby’s not at
fault.” I grabbed his other hand as he closed his eyes and let out a breath I
didn’t know he had been holding. He slowly nodded once. I’m not sure what the
nod meant, but it felt like progress.
“About
my date with Bobby…it was just what I told you it was, innocent. Why he did the
secret stuff for the 7 days before,” I shrugged but realized Ranger still had
his eyes closed, “I don’t really understand myself. He said he did it to get my
attention. It worked. The night I was at his house, all that happened was that
he made me dinner; we danced a little and talked. I didn’t sleep with him.”
Ranger still had his eyes closed.
“Ranger?”
Again he nodded just once. Okay…guess I’ll just keep going.
“I’m
sorry I didn’t explain all that before. Tank was right. The principle I was
fighting for was a good one. The battle I chose to fight was the wrong one.” I
paused, one last point to cover. I hadn’t realized it, but I was gently rubbing
the back of his hands with my thumbs.
“I
know it’s none of my business what your relationship is with Bobby, but I
believe he was not trying to take me
from you. Besides, no one can make me do something I don’t want to,” I said
with a smile. “He wanted the one date. After hearing about Monica, I understand
that request a little better. Anyway, he said from the very beginning that he
knew I loved you…” At the same time my hand went up to slap across my big
mouth, Ranger’s eyes flew open. Oh shit.
The
Chase - Chapter 11
My
eyes flew open. Did she just say she
loved me? From the look in her eyes, and the fact she has a hand clamped over
her mouth, she didn’t expect to say that.
We sat, suspended in time, not moving, both of us unsure of what was
just said.
“Babe?” She blinked.
I
moved in closer so that I ended up on my hands and knees, only inches from her
face. God she’s beautiful.
I
moved closer again. She dropped back in
the sand on her elbows.
“Stephanie,”
I whispered.
**********************
What
the hell just came out of my mouth?
“Babe?” Oh wonderful. He heard me. Well, I sure as hell wasn’t going to say
anything else. Na uh… no way.
Ranger
started toward me, ending on his hands and knees, with his face only a breath
away from mine. This might be a little
too close right now. I leaned back so
that I rested on my elbows.
“Stephanie,”
he whispered. As if my hormones needed
any encouragement, he went and whispered my name.
He
was moving toward me again. I went to
the only place I had left to go - flat on my back. He was still kneeling over me, but when I straighten my legs, he
left his knees and got up on his toes, one leg on either side of mine,
stretching full length over me. Then he
ever so slowly lowered his body on top of mine.
Oh
god. I closed my eyes and just let the
feeling of his body against mine soak in.
I felt his full soft lips brush against mine. “Babe,” I could feel him smiling, “say it again.”
In
a rush, I let out a breath with the words, “I love you.” Huh? Who said that? Shit, I’ve lost all control.
Ranger’s
lips, which had never left mine, now were pressed against me. His tongue traced my lips, wanting
entrance. I opened my mouth and eagerly
met him. We battled; my tongue met his
stroke for stroke.
He
lowered himself to his forearms and slid his hands up into my hair. My hands moved up and let lose the leather
tie that was holding his. The minute his hair was free, I couldn’t help
but run my hands through it.
When
he broke the kiss, I opened my eyes in surprise. His eyes didn’t seem red any longer. They were warm pools of brown, just begging for me to get lost in
them.
“Say
it again.” There was no smile this
time. He was dead serious.
I
mirrored his look. I was never more serious in my life. “I love you Ranger.”
His
eyes darkened and pulled me further in. I didn’t care. I loved this man and he needed to know
it.
But
wait. He hadn’t said it back to me yet.
A
smile broke out on his face. “Oh, Stephanie Plum, you don’t ever have to worry
about that.” Then, in an instant, he
was serious again. “I love you too. I always have and I always will.”
Oh.
My. God. Did Ranger just say he’s
always loved me? I started to see
little black dots. Oh no, I can’t pass
out now, not now!
I
didn’t have to worry about that too long, the ring of Ranger’s cell phone
brought me back to reality.
God
damnit! Not again!
He
let out a heavy sigh and pushed up to sit back on his knees. “No,” he said with determination, “not
again.” Ooops. Guess I said that out loud.
“What!” Ranger didn’t sound happy. I sure didn’t want to be the person on the
other end of the phone.
For
a few, very long, seconds, Ranger didn’t say anything. Our eyes were locked and I couldn’t tell if
he was listening or just staring at me, ignoring whoever was on the phone.
“Get
out of the house. Get out of
California” he barked. Huh? Silence again.
“Fuck
you.” Silence, then a small wolf smile
appeared, accompanied by the darkening of his eyes.
“Yes,
I plan on it.” Gulp. The smile disappeared.
“Tank,
you and Lester leave. Now. I’ll need a new cell phone. Put it in my car before you go.” He flipped the phone shut. I could swear I heard laughing coming from
the phone before he closed it.
“Why
do you need a new cell phone?” I know,
out of all the questions I could have asked, that was the first one out of my
mouth. I have no control, remember?
“Because,”
he said as he raised the hand with the phone it in. “This one is going away.”
He pitched the phone out into the ocean.
“Ranger!”
I yelled as I sat up and looked out in the direction he threw the phone. I
turned back to look at him still kneeling over me.
“Good
idea.” I gave him the sexiest smile I
owned.
I
received his patented wolf grin in response.
He started to move me back down by slowly leaning forward. As before I
first dropped to my elbows, then flat on my back. We were soon in the same
position as before.
“Babe,”
he started as he stroked my hair, “one of the two most important things in my
life is here with me right now, and deserves my full attention.” He smiled, but this time it reached his eyes
and was filled with warmth, tenderness and caring. “If my daughter needs something and can’t reach me, she knows to
call one of the guys.”
I
never had the chance to respond. When
Ranger’s lips met mine, all coherent thought left me. I could feel the emotion
he put into the kiss…all the love…all the longing. I returned the kiss in kind.
One
of his hands started to move. He traced down my shoulder and then my side, all
the while kissing me senseless. I
guess he had had enough of my lips because started to place small kisses down
my jaw until he reached my neck. “ I can never get enough of your lips,
Stephanie.” Oh…I really loved this man.
He
sucked and nipped in one spot on my neck for so long, I just knew I would have
a bruise. Hell, I didn’t care. All I could do was moan when he left that
spot and got to the sensitive place where my neck and shoulder met.
He started to move a hand up under my shirt,
but the combination of nerves, sand and his soft touch, set me off
laughing. He pulled his head back and
stopped his hand…sort of. His thumb was
softly moving back and forth across my stomach.
He
smiled as he asked, “What’s so funny?”
God,
just the small movement of his thumb was driving me crazy... and those eyes
looking into my soul. Jesus, I had to really concentrate to speak.
“It’s
just,” I giggled, “…it’s just that the sand is a little rough and well…it
tickles.”
I
saw an evil look grow in his eyes. “You
don’t like to be tickled, Babe?” Uh oh.
“Umm…”
I stopped to laugh because his whole hand was moving across my stomach and
side. “Uh…no.” Laugh. “I…” Laugh. “Don’t!”
I yelped. I was trying to roll
on my side and bring my knees up, but it was no use with him on top of me. I just ended up wiggling underneath him and
laughing. I think he liked it.
My
hands finally caught his and held it still.
When I had some of my composure back, I looked at him and just
smiled. He had gone absolutely still
and returned the smile.
“I’m
in love with you, Stephanie Plum.”
I
brought one of my hands to his face. “I’m
in love with you, Ricardo Manoso.”
He
let out a sigh and leaned in to kiss me. Not a ‘I want to rip your clothes off’
kind of kiss, but the ‘I really love you’ kind.
Eventually he broke the kiss, stood up and
held a hand out to help me up.
“You’re
right Babe,” he said as he brushed himself off, “this isn’t the best place for
me to ruin you. I’ve done the ‘in the
sand with no blanket’ thing. It’s not
much fun.”
“Yeah,
it hurts.” He stopped brushing and
looked at me. “What?” I rolled my eyes and continued to brush
myself off. “On my honeymoon with THE DICK.
Lord, he was such an ass. Since
he ‘couldn’t wait’, when we got back to the hotel, I made him go to the store
and buy me a…” I paused from my brushing also.
“What?” He was just staring at me.
I was starting to get worried.
Yeah, I was babbling, but he knows how I am when I’m nervous.
He
took the two steps needed to get to me and placed his hands on my arms. “Looks like I have a lot of work to do.”
Huh?
“Huh?”
“I
have my work cut out for me if I plan on replacing all the bad memories with
good ones.” My jaw fell open.
“Stephanie,
the next time you’re on the beach I want you to remember a beautiful memory of
us, not a bad one of you and your ex…or even Morelli for that matter.”
“Do
you really think you can just wipe out all the bad things that have happened to
me?” I really wanted to know if he thought he could do that. I know Batman is the shit…but, come on.
“No,
I can’t take back what bad has happened, but I can try to put something good in
front of it.” He was serious.
I
snorted. “What? Are you going to ‘take
me’ behind the counter at the Tasty Pastry and then not write about it
on the stadium wall?” It was a joke,
but Ranger didn’t get it.
He
had that mischievous evil grin on his face again as he grabbed my hand and we
headed back to the beach house. “That’ll be the first place we go when we get
back.” What?! “Maybe even head over to
the Morelli’s garage…I’ll show you how to play choo choo.” Naw, he was joking…right?
“No
Babe, I’m not,” he said, but a smile played on his lips.
Oh boy!
The
Chase - Chapter 12
Just
when fear blinded me you taught me to dream.
I’ll
give you everything I am and still fall short of
What
you’ve done for me.
In
this life that I live
I
hope I can give love unselfishly.
I’ve
learned the world is bigger than me
You’re
my daily dose of reality.
Stand
Here With Me - Creed
It
took us some time to reach the beach house.
I didn’t think we had gone that far away, but I guess we did. For some reason the house was lit up like a
beacon.
As
we approached, we both noticed all the candles - everywhere. They were all over the porch, in the sand,
and I could see them inside the house too. Damn.
It
didn’t seem to faze Ranger, but it stopped me cold. “Wha...?”
Ranger
stopped to look at me, wolf grin firmly in place. I had a feeling I was going to be seeing that grin a lot. “Tank and Lester…probably had some helpers
too.” I raised an eyebrow. Ok, I tried
to, but he understood my unspoken question.
“Babe,
you charmed four mob goons into giving you their contact numbers.” My hand immediately went to my pocket. Ranger chuckled and pulled me close to him,
placing his hands around my waist. “Do you really think they were going to
leave before making sure you were ok?”
Now both my eyebrows met my hairline.
He
chuckled again and shook his head. “You
really have no idea the effect you have on people, do you? You charm everyone you meet without even
trying.”
I snorted, rolled my eyes and moved my head
to the side. What the hell is he
talking about?
He
grabbed my chin and turned my face back up to his. Then he gave me one deep, passionate, drugging kiss.
Pulling
back, he said, “And I’m the luckiest one out of them all.” Wolf grin again. “’Cause you’re mine.” With that, his lips crashed down on mine
again. This time I had expected it, and
responded.
Just
as I was about ready to rip his clothes off I had a thought.
Pulling
back I said, “Ranger! Where’s Maxie?” I
looked around. “What if she’s in the house? She could knock over a candle and
burn the place down.” I jerked from his
embrace and headed into the house. Ranger was saying something after me, but
his words were lost in the wind.
I
burst into the kitchen. “Maxie!
Maxie!” I made my rounds through
the bathroom, living room, and bedroom.
When I came back into the kitchen, Ranger was standing at the table
holding a piece of paper.
When
he saw me, he held it out to me. I
stepped forward and took it from him.
Boss,
Took
the mutt. See you both back in Trenton.
T
“Oh.” I must have missed the note my first time
through the kitchen. I would have seen
it…eventually.
“Yes,
oh,” Ranger said as he walked around the table and took me in his arms. “It was nice of you to think of Maxie and
her safety.” He brushed some hair out
of my face and put his other hand around my back. We heard sand hit the floor.
“I
guess we should get cleaned up,” I suggested, locking my eyes with his. He
nodded.
“Need
any help?” Hmmm, let me think.
Ranger…shower…wet Ranger…scary me covered in sand.
“Nope,
not this time. Catch me next time…” I smiled.
“You
can count on it.” He leaned in to kiss
me, but I broke away.
“I’ll
never get cleaned up if I don’t start now.”
I scurried into the bathroom.
I
stripped my clothes off with, what must have been, at least a half a ton of
sand. The other half I washed off in
the shower. Once I was clean, I wrapped
myself in a towel and realized I hadn’t brought my bag in with me. I stepped to the door an opened it just a
crack.
“Ranger?”
“Yeah
Babe?” I jumped. Shit, he was right
outside the door. “Decided you needed some help?”
“Uh,
well, sort of.” He appeared in front of
the door. “ I need my overnight bag. Can you get it for me?” I know I was turning 3 shades of red.
Ranger
pushed the door open. “Hey,” I
started. But, he just bent down,
grabbed my sandy clothes and left without saying a word. I shut the door, turned back to the mirror
and started to towel dry my hair. I
jumped when the door opened and Ranger walked in.
This
time I couldn’t speak. He came back in
with only his black boxers on. I
couldn’t help but stare and I know I was drooling. Damn this man was fine. He smiled, set some clothes on the
counter and backed out the door, shutting it behind him.
I
picked up the clothes. There were only
two pieces, one of his t-shirts and a pair of my undies. Oh great. Then I had to laugh…who am I kidding? Just less he has to take off me later. Oh yeah!
I
dressed, gave my hair another tussle with the towel and stepped out of the
bathroom. Ranger, of course, was right
there. He looked me up and down very
slowly. He eyes turned dark as he
started to reach for me, but he stopped and dropped his hand back down to his side.
“I
better go shower before I touch you.
It’s not going to do any good if only one of us is sand free,” he said
as he marched into the bathroom.
I
rummaged around in the refrigerator until I found a six-pack of Coke. Mental note: thank Tank and Lester when I
get back. I went to the back door and
slurped on my drink. I watched the
water roll in, the candles outside were beautiful, and everything was just
perfect.
I
was jerked out of my thoughts when I sensed Ranger come up behind me.
“Serious
thoughts?” he asked as he wrapped his arms around me under my t-shirt. He
pulled me back slightly and I melted into him.
He
started to kiss my neck and shoulder. “Mmmm…just thinking how perfect
everything is right now,” I said kind of breathlessly.
His
lips made it up the side of my neck to my ear. “I love you Stephanie.” Before I could even say it back, Ranger
swept me up into his arms and headed toward the bedroom.
He
gently set me down on the side of the bed and kneeled in front of me. I put my hands on his shoulders, but decided
that wasn’t enough. I started to run my
hands up and down his arms.
His
hands were on my back, slowly going up and down underneath the t-shirt. We sat like that, just looking at each
other, until I couldn’t take it any more.
I leaned down and put my lips to his. I was the one seeking entrance
this time. I licked around his lips, then gently caught hold of his lower lip
between my teeth. I ran my tongue back and forth across it and moaned.
His
hands slid around to my sides and started to make their way up, effectively
lifting the t-shirt and exposing my mid section in the process. He stopped their upward movement when he
reached just under my breasts. Ranger
took control of the kiss now and deepened it. His tongue explored and tasted
everywhere it could while his thumbs gently brushed back and forth across the
sensitive underside of my breasts.
I
brought my hands to the back of his head trying desperately to bring him closer
to me. He must have taken the hint,
because his hands started their upward trek again, only stopping briefly to
have his thumbs rub over my already extended nipples. This elicited a deep groan from me and the next thing I was aware
of was the night air hitting my now exposed chest.
In
one smooth motion, Ranger had broken our kiss, lifted my shirt off and managed
to get my entire body flat on the bed.
He was poised over me, just like we had been on the beach. I slowly
closed my eyes and waited for his body to touch mine.
“Stephanie,
open your eyes.”
I
did as he asked with a questioning look on my face. “I need to see your eyes as we make love.”
He
then lowered himself on top of me. Our
underwear being the only clothing that separated us. With eyes locked, him resting on his forearms on either side of
my face, my hands went around to his back. I started to caress up and down
slowly, up with a slight scraping of my nails, and down with the palms of my
hands.
He
sucked in some air and closed his eyes for a split second before assaulting my
lips with his. He fisted his hands in
my hair and tugged gently. My head
followed his direction and titled back, baring my neck to him. He went after
the soft sensitive skin, licking and biting. He trailed a string of hot wet
kisses down the center of my neck until he reached right between my breasts,
where he stopped to lick and flick his tongue.
His
lips left my skin and I felt his hot breath back on my face. We were both breathing heavily, our chests
rising and falling in unison.
“Babe,
please keep your eyes open.”
************************************
“Babe,
please keep your eyes open,” I said gently.
Stephanie lifted her head and
opened her eyes to look at me. Her
eyes were so dilated, I could only see a small outline of blue. “God, you’re gorgeous.”
I
could feel my erection pressing against her stomach. Jesus…slow down. I took a couple of deep breaths and returned to
where I had left off.
My
tongue made it’s way back down between her breasts. As I licked up the side of her left breast, I slid off of her
onto my right side. My left hand rested
on her stomach as my tongue licked around her nipple. Her breath hitched, she arched her back, and moaned.
Oh
god… I did what she wanted. My tongue
flicked the hardened nipple back and forth as my hand started to rub circles on
her stomach. Steph fisted her hands in
my hair as my teeth nipped at the extended bud. I heard her groan and looked up to find her looking down and
watching me. I held her eyes as I
covered her nipple with my mouth and started to suckle. Her eyes got wide then
turned to a liquid blue, watching me.
My
hand moved down to find soaked panties.
****************************
I
watched as Ranger devoured my body with his mouth, hands and eyes. When his hand found my wet undies, I closed
my eyes and gasped. I couldn’t help it.
He didn’t say anything so when he started to gently stroke me through
the fabric, I put my head back and drank in the wonderful sensations.
His
mouth moved to my other nipple while he expertly removed my panties. When his
fingers returned to slowly open my folds, I held my breath in
anticipation. When his warm finger
finally touched the hardness between my legs, I sucked in more air. His touch was given with just the slightest
of pressures as he moved his finger, circling.
I
could feel the tingle start in my feet and run up the inside of my legs. I
arched my back and thrust my hips upward.
Ranger lifted and went to his knees. I whimpered when his hand left
me. His teeth caught hold of my nipple
and as he raised his head to reposition himself, he tugged and pulled at it. I
groaned when he let go.
I
waited for his touch to return. When it
didn’t come quickly, I opened my eyes.
He was sporting his wolfiest grin yet and had removed his boxers. He was
a magnificent sight, kneeling there while candlelight danced on his mocha
colored skin. I felt myself get wetter
just looking at him. Christ.
Once
I managed to tear my eyes away from his impressive package, I looked up and
caught his gaze. He leaned back on his
heels and started to work my lower region again. Ahhh…that’s what he was
waiting for. I didn’t want him to stop, so I never lost his eyes.
He
started circling again but with more pressure this time. With his other hand, I felt him enter me
with one, then two, fingers. My hips met him stroke for stroke. I could feel myself near the edge. Oh god, I wanted to thrash my head back and
forth but I was afraid he’d stop if I broke eye contact. My hands clutched the
bed sheets. I couldn’t stand it. Having to keep somewhat still was driving me
insane.
I
felt myself just on the edge of my orgasm.
I was trying to control too many things…my movement, keeping my eyes open…and
my orgasm.
I
watched Ranger as he silently mouthed ‘I love you’. That’s all it took. My orgasm burst over me in a wave of physical
sensations and emotional catharsis. I
was lifted higher and higher as my body was rocked with pleasure.
Before
I could come back down, Ranger was over me with his face inches from mine. Through the haze I felt his hips rock
against mine as he pressed for entrance. I opened to him willingly.
As
he slowly entered me, I saw a look of complete satisfaction cross his
face. Finally, completely inside me, he
stilled and closed his eyes. I brought my hands up to cup his face. He slowly opened his eyes.
“I
love you, Ricardo.”
He
groaned and started to move inside me. Slowly at first, but when I brought my
knees up and my hands down to his ass to push him in deeper, he quickened the
pace. I felt myself start to tighten
again.
Ranger
shifted to get up on his knees and lifted my hips off the bed. He slammed into me, withdrawing slowly only
to slam back in. I was on the edge and started to whimper. Ranger supported my hips with one arm and
brought his other hand up to rub where we were joined. My head went back and a sound came from deep
within I couldn’t identify. I brought
my hand down to rub my aching clit.
I
felt Ranger stiffen and a growl escaped his throat. This pushed me the last few millimeters I needed. I came - hard.
My
inner muscles milked him as he emptied his hot liquid inside me. God almighty, I’ve never felt anything like
this before. My whole body felt like
one big exposed nerve.
He
collapsed on top of me as I came down from my second mind-blowing orgasm. We
lay there panting, trying to catch our breath.
He
lifted his head and started to gently place small kisses all over my face. My hands gently stroked his back.
Ranger
lifted his hips and slowly pulled out of me, then rolled over on his back. I snuggled up against his side, resting my
head on his shoulder.
He
kissed the top of my head. “Babe,” he
started, but was still trying to even out his breathing, “you’re amazing.”
I
smiled into his shoulder. “The same
goes for you.” I felt his rumbled
laughter.
“I
need to go clean up,” he said as he got up from the bed.
“Ok,”
I mumbled as I rolled over and burrowed into the bed. I was just drifting off when I felt the bed sink and a warm body
pressed up against my back.
We
fell asleep very much like we had woken up earlier, Ranger spooning me from
behind. All was right with the world.
The
Chase - Chapter 13
For
the third time in the last several hours, I woke to soft warm lips, brushing
light kisses along my neck and shoulders.
Doesn’t this man know when to stop?
God, I hoped not. I could get used to this.
“Mmmm,”
I moaned, as I stretched and rolled over to face Ranger. I smiled and opened my eyes. “Hi,” came out
in a husky whisper. I watched Ranger’s
eyes darken.
Oh
boy!
*********************************************
I
sat in the chair by the window and watched her sleep. I turned to look out the window.
It was still dark outside and the sun would be up soon, but since it
started raining a few hours ago, I doubted we’d actually see any. Either way, I needed to wake her or my plan
would be ruined.
I
sighed. I could watch her sleep all day
and not tire of it. She was so
beautiful. Closing my eyes, I
remembered what it was to touch her, feel her smooth skin against mine, to
taste her. Yep, watching was wonderful,
but being able to touch, well, that was something all together different. Right this instant, I felt the need to
touch.
She’s
going to kill me. This is the third time in the last 6 hours I’ve woke her, but
I can’t help it. As long as she doesn’t
seem to mind, I’ll keep doing it.
Steph
was all curled up on her side. I walked
to the other side of the bed, gently lifted the covers, and scooted under
them. I started exactly the way I had
the past two times, by softly nibbling at her neck and shoulders.
I
felt the sharp intake of breath and stopped my movement, only to resume when
she started to let it out in one long exhale.
“Mmmm,”
she moaned, and then stretched. I felt
the tightening in my lower abdomen. Good god, what she does to me.
I
was still working on her neck when she decided to roll over. She had a soft, sleepy smile on her lips
when her eyes popped open. “Hi,” she
growled. I swear it came from deep
within, in a husky tone. At that
moment, ‘hi’ just became the sexiest word on the planet.
“Hi,”
I replied. Shit. I think my voice just cracked.
Steph
slowly closed her eyes and widened her smile.
I brushed some hair out of her face, tucked it behind her ear, and then
ran my hand around to the back of her head. I watched as her tongue darted to
wet her lips, as they parted, still smiling.
No
one can ever accuse me of a missed opportunity. I leaned in and tenderly touched my lips to hers. My tongue immediately pushed into her mouth
to explore. It didn’t take long for her to wake up and respond. Her left hand fisted in my hair, as her
right came around to my back, and felt it’s way under my boxers.
My
body involuntarily pressed up against hers. I needed to stop this now or we’d
never make it outside. I pulled back
and broke the kiss. I think I heard her
whimper.
“I
have a surprise for you,” I said. I
wanted to make sure she knew why I stopped the kiss.
Her
eyes grew large. “You do?” She sounded
excited. Good.
I
nodded, and started to get off the bed.
Reaching to the end of the bed, I threw her a t-shirt to put on. “Come
on.”
She
sat up and studied the t-shirt.
“White?”
I
shrugged. “It’s clean. Come on.”
I
received a skeptical, “Uh huh,” in return.
I
waited at the doorway with my hand extended. She slipped the t-shirt over her
head, lifted off the bed, and grabbed my hand as she met me at the door.
“I
should probably ask where you’re taking me,” she raised her hand before I could
say anything, “but I won’t.” I just
gave her a smile that I had hoped would let her know, what we’d be doing, when
we got where we were going.
She
rolled her eyes. “Lead on.”
Chuckling,
I led her out of the bedroom and into the kitchen to the back door. I stepped through the door, but was stopped
when her hand tugged backward on mine.
“Ranger,
it’s raining,” she exclaimed.
“I
know. It’s not raining hard.” I turned
to start out but was stopped once again.
“I’ll
get wet!”
I
turned, stepped back to her and put my hand at the back of her neck. Pulling her forward, I kissed her hard and
deep. I broke it off and said, “I know.”
She
looked a little off balance. Perfect.
“If
I remember correctly, before we can leave, there’s a bad memory of yours I need
to cover up with a good one.” Her
beautiful blues eyes grew as big as I had ever seen them.
I
turned, and this time, when I started out, she followed right behind me.
“My
god, you were serious!”
We
were about two steps off the porch. I
turned back, came as close to her face as I could, looked her directly in the
eyes, and said, “Yes, I was.” I left no
room for doubt. She blinked once as the
rain started to spatter on her shocked face. I continued my way out to the
blanket and bucket of water I had waiting for us.
Reaching
the designed spot, I stopped. “Step into the bucket to rinse your feet” I think
she was still too stunned to speak.
Steph
did what I asked. Before she could step out, I lifted her in my arms and
stepped in the bucket myself. Then
carefully, I went directly from there onto the blanket.
I
gently put her down, and placed my knees on either side of her hips. I was hard as a rock by now and Steph was
taking notice. Her t-shirt, while not
soaked yet, was definitely wet enough to accentuate her obvious excitement
also. I fell forward while my hands,
palms flat, caught me right above her shoulders.
I
watched, absorbed, as her eyes began to dilate, even jumping slightly when she
rested her hands on my upper arms. She
broke our trance when she started to watch her hands run over the muscles in my
arms.
“Someone
might see us,” she whispered in weak protest.
I
shook my head. “This is a private beach, the guys are gone, and who else would
be out at the crack of dawn when it’s raining?
Besides, you’re wearing a shirt.”
I took this opportunity to look her up and down. She was wetter by now and the t-shirt was
molded to her in all the right places.
A
teasing smile broke through her dazed look, “Possibly some people on a
mission.”
Her
words sparked more tightening in my groin. “Let’s just worry about our mission,
Babe.” Time for talk was over.
I
was just about to lower myself down to her, when in a lightening move, Steph
put a hand behind my neck and lifted herself up to me. She attacked my mouth like she was
ravenous. I chuckled into her mouth as
I bent my arms at the elbows, slowly lowering both of us down. “Hungry Babe?” I asked after she detached her lips
from mine.
“Yeah, as a matter of fact I am,” she said in a
hoarse whisper.
She came at me again, more forceful this time, hands
fisting in my hair. I lowered myself onto my forearms and settled in. She
tasted wonderful.
I’m still amazed she’s here with me, and that she’s
mine. That thought caused me to moan
into her and intensify the kiss. Mine. Forever? God, I hoped so.
I shifted my weigh to one side, to free a hand. I started to tenderly massage her breast
through the wet cotton. She groaned and took my tongue into her mouth and
started to suck.
Cutting off the kiss, I moved my head down so my
mouth could work her other breast through the wet fabric. As my tongue flicked at the one hard nipple,
my hand mimicked the movements on the other.
She arched her back and moaned loudly.
My free hand worked its way up under the wet shirt.
Her skin was soft and slick. Reconnecting with her breast, I circled the pad of
my thumb around the distended and puckered skin.
Steph reached down between us and grabbed my
erection. She stroked up and down in a
steady rhythm. The feel of the wet silk
and steady pressure, as her hand moved, was going to push me over the edge.
I reached down to stop her movements.
“Steph…don’t.” I brought my head up
from her breast to look at her. She lay
there, with wet ringlets of hair stuck to her face, not able to control her
breathing. Her chest heaved with every breath.
“Roll over,” she let out in a gasp.
I rolled onto my back with her following right
behind me. She straddled my hips and
put her hands on my shoulders, pinning me to the ground. Her hair fell forward while water dripped
furiously from the ends. She pushed
down on my shoulders. “Stay.”
She bent down and stuck her ass in the air as she
took my nipple into her mouth and tongued it. My eyes closed as her hand went
to work circling the other. I couldn’t
help but moan from the pleasure she was giving me.
Her hand left my chest and trailed its way down to
my boxers. Slipping her hand inside she
started to stroke me again. Good god, I
was going to come and I wasn’t even naked yet.
She caught me by surprise when her teeth grazed my sensitive nipple. I
sucked in some air and arched my back.
Her lower hand left me and started to work my underwear off. She was taking her time, and making sure, no
part of my lower anatomy was neglected.
Once the boxers were gone, she stopped abruptly and
scooted back until her mouth was poised right above my throbbing cock. As I rose up on my elbows, her eyes
fluttered up to meet mine. Very slowly,
a wolf grin spread across her face. She
grabbed the base of my cock with her right hand. Never breaking eye contact, I watched, frozen in place, as her
tongue gradually extended from her mouth and ever so slightly touched the
pre-cum that had gathered at the slit.
She licked it up, curled her tongue back into her mouth, and swallowed.
Before I had time to process the scene I had just
witnessed, her mouth covered me and started to slide up and down. The heat from her mouth and the soft
caressing of her lips enveloped me. My
head went back, and my eyes closed, as my hips started to thrust to her rhythm.
“Jesus…Steph…Oh god…” I couldn’t form a complete
sentence. “Stop…I…I…ohhh…won’t…please.”
Her lips left me and I wanted to cry out at the
loss.
I felt her knees on either side of my hips. After
several seconds of no movement, I opened my eyes to see her staring down at
me. Once our eyes locked, she lowered
herself and brushed her opening against me, then suddenly, in one quick motion,
thrust herself down.
My eyes snapped shut and my hips shot up, as I cried
out, “Oh god!”
She started to ride me at a slow steady pace, her
hot wet insides covering me one second, then gone the next, only to
return. I reveled in the slick
sensations, feeling myself get closer and closer to the edge. But god, I wanted this moment to last
forever.
Feeling her hands come to rest on my lower thighs, I
opened my eyes to see the most beautiful, erotic image that will be burned into
my brain forever: Stephanie, rain falling, soaking wet, a t-shirt formed to
every luscious curve, head thrown back, chest out and nipples straining, riding
me at a torturous pace. God help me.
Just when I felt I couldn’t hold on any longer, I
reached down and circled her clit with my thumb. She screamed, and started to
buck wildly. I felt her inner muscles close and tighten around me. I pumped and
rubbed, trying to extend both our climaxes. Finally, I reached out and grabbed
her hips to steady her. Then slammed up one…two…three times as I emptied myself
into her.
Finally spent, her upper body came crashing down on
mine. I threw my arms around her and
rolled us onto our sides. We lay like
that, holding each other in the rain, each trying to gain back some composure.
The
Chase - Chapter 14
I
sat in the chair by the window and watched her sleep.
Right this instant, I felt the need to
touch.
************************************
For
the third time in the last several hours, I woke to soft warm lips, brushing
light kisses along my neck and shoulders.
“Hi,”
he smiled back in a deep rumble.
I
closed my eyes and smiled wider. I loved
being in bed with this man. I loved
being with this man. I loved this man,
period. I think if I smiled any bigger
my face would crack and fall off. My
lips felt dry when I smiled, so I licked them.
Before
I could think about the consequences of my actions, Ranger’s lips were on
mine. His tongue swept into my mouth
and started exploring. That move
certainly got my attention, and my hormones swung into action. I returned the kiss eagerly, meeting and
wrestling with his tongue, stroke for stroke.
He
pressed up against me, and just as I was about to moan, he stopped the kiss and
pulled back. I whimpered or maybe it was more of a whine. Either way, I let him know I didn’t like it.
“I
have a surprise for you,” he said.
Well, at least there was a reason for his stopping.
A
surprise for me? As if the last twelve
hours hasn’t been one big surprise. I
started to get tingly in all the right places.
“You do?”
He
nodded and moved to get off the bed. He
picked up a shirt from the end of the bed and tossed it to me. “Come on.”
I
sat up and blinked. The shirt was
white. I thought there was some law, or
something, that prohibited him from buy anything but black. Hmm.
I
looked at him. “White?”
He
just shrugged. “It’s clean. Come on.”
Yeah,
right. He’s up to something. “Uh huh,”
I mumbled skeptically. The idea that he
was up to something only made me tingle more, and, I felt a sudden
wetness between my legs.
He
was standing at the door, holding his hand out to me. I slipped the t-shirt over my head and met him at the door.
Putting his hand in mine I said, “I should probably ask where you’re taking
me,” I raised my free hand in a ‘stop’ gesture, “but I won’t.” Ranger just gave me a shit eatin’ grin as a
response. Oh my…tingle…tingle.
To
try and cover for my hormones, I just rolled my eyes. “Lead on,” I said.
He
emitted a small laugh as he led me to the back door. He pushed the door open and started to step outside. I pulled his hand back.
“Ranger,
it’s raining.” I said. I know I was stating the obvious, but I
still sounded surprised.
“I
know. It’s not raining hard.”
That’s
it? That’s all he’s going to say! “I’ll
get wet!” Well, duh Stephanie! Mental head slap. Like my hair couldn’t use a good wetting down after last
night. The minute I thought about my
hair, I had to fight the urge not to fling my hand to my head.
I
started when I felt Ranger’s hand grab the back of my neck. He pulled me forward and kisses me until I
thought my knees would give out. He
stopped suddenly and said, “I know.”
I
was too stunned to respond.
Looking
deeply into my eyes he said, “If I remember correctly, before we can leave,
there’s a bad memory of yours I need to cover up with a good one.” My eyes widened until I thought they would
burst from my head.
He
turned and continued out the door with me stumbling behind him.
“My god, you were serious!”
We
had just stepped off the porch when he turned and got right in my face. “Yes, I
was.” All I could manage was a blink.
Gosh, be more confident why don’t you.
He
turned forward and headed out toward the water with me in tow. We came up on a blanket and bucket. The blanket was wet and the bucket, was,
well, full of water.
“Step
into the bucket to rinse your feet,” he commanded.
I
was mesmerized watching the rain hit the water in the bucket. I looked up at Ranger, blinked again, and
then did as he asked. Before I could
step out, Ranger lifted me in his arms.
He stepped into the bucket, swished his feet around, then stepped out
onto the blanket.
Ohhh,
I get it. No sand was going to rub us
the wrong way. I can just bet all the
rubbing will be done to perfection. I
felt my insides tighten at the thought.
He
carefully placed me on the blanket, then kneeled straddling my hips. My eyes were drawn to his very impressive,
very aroused, package. I shivered internally.
I knew exactly what that excellent package was capable of.
I
blinked a few times as the rain hit my face and I felt the t-shirt start to
stick to my skin. Ah ha! I knew there was a reason for white. I just hoped I was able to create the effect
he was going for. Well, I knew the
nipple twins were happy. I could feel
their ache for his touch. Hell, every
inch of me was aching for his touch.
He
caught me off guard a little when he started to fall toward me, but he caught
himself by placing his hands on the blanket above my shoulders. I started to breath heavy. It was only a matter of time now. Yum. My eyes wandered down to his massive
arms. They bulged and strained as they
held his weight.
The
urge to run my hands along those golden brown arms was overwhelming. He jumped a little when I actually reached
out and did it. For some reason, I
still felt the need to protest…but only a little.
“Someone
might see us.” I know I didn’t sound
like I cared, because I didn’t care, but I gave it a shot at least.
He
shook his head slightly, but that’s all it took for water to spray from the tip
of his nose and chin. Some of his hair
fell forward and water ran from the ends onto my chest. “This is a private
beach, the guys are gone, and who else would be out at the crack of dawn when
it’s raining? Besides, you’re wearing a
shirt.”
Once
he was finished talking, his eyes racked me from top to bottom. I was almost soaking wet by now. The shirt was molded to my body. His hot gazed just turned me on more.
I
smiled my own version of the wolf grin and responded, “Possibly some people on
a mission.”
I
saw desire flash across his face. He growled, “Let’s just worry about our
mission, Babe.”
That’s
it. I’m done talking. I reached up and hooked my hand behind his
neck and lifted myself as my lips crashed onto his. I couldn’t get enough of him.
I attacked him, devoured him. He tasted so good. I likened the feeling I
was having, to being the same as if I had been deprived, for years, of
pineapple upside down cake, and suddenly having a whole cake presented to me.
I
felt the vibrations of his muffled laughter go through me as he started to
gently lower us to the blanket. Finally
needing to breathe, I grudgingly ripped my lips from his.
“Hungry,
Babe?”
He
had no flippin’ clue.
“Yeah,
as a matter of fact I am.” My voice
sounded low and husky even to me. My mouth lunged at his again as my hands went
to fist in his hair.
He
moved to get more comfortable, but never broke the kiss. My mind was spinning. It was having a hard time believing I was
here, right now, with Ranger. For so
long he was only part of my dreams.
My thoughts
shattered as Ranger deepened the kiss and moaned into my mouth. Oh lord, I was
here, right now, with him…and he’s all mine.
But for how long? Nope, not
going there at the moment.
Ranger
shifted his weight to one side and slid halfway off me. His hand came to my breast and started to
massage it. The pressure of his touch
combined with the wet fabric, tortured my overly sensitive nipples. It felt
great. I groaned into him and sucked his tongue into my mouth.
He
pried his mouth from mine and dropped his head to my chest. His tongue started to work my other nipple,
flicking, while his hand did the same on the other side. Jesus, he was trying to torture me. Involuntarily my back arched and some sort
of sound came out of my mouth.
His
hand movements suddenly stopped, but then quickly started again as he began to
tunnel between the wet shirt and me.
Ranger’s hand slid up my wet skin to reconnect with my breast. I almost gasped as he started to roll my
nipple with one of his fingers.
I
couldn’t take much more. I had to touch
him. Reaching down I grabbed his hard
manhood, and started to stroke him through his boxers, trying to keep a steady
pressure and pace.
He
surprised me when his hand caught mine.
“Steph…don’t,” he said as he lifted his head to meet my eyes. He stared for a few seconds. God only knows what I looked like. Probably
something like a drowned rat. Let’s not
dwell…we needed a change in position.
“Roll
over,” I commanded.
He
complied, and I was ready to straddle him the minute his back hit the
blanket. I leaned forward and placed my
hands on his shoulders. “Stay.” I meant to say please, but my breathing
wasn’t right and one word was all I could get out. I think he got the hint.
I
bent further down and paid some attention to his chest and nipples. He must have liked it, because when I
started to flick my tongue he moaned…quite loudly. Well, well…let’s see what
else I can do to get some noises from him.
I
slowly moved my hand down his wet, rock hard chest and stomach. Just the feel of all those muscles sent a
wave of pleasure through me.
Pushing
my hand under his boxers, I latched on to another rock hard part of his
body. At the same time, I started to
move my hand up and down, then bit at his nipple. I heard the intake of air as he arched his back. Ok, I can take a hint too.
Releasing
him, my hand worked at getting his damn underwear off. It’s much easier when they are not wet. In my struggles, my hand would touch various
parts of him, and of course, I had to linger.
I don’t want him to feel neglected or anything.
Finally
freeing him of the stupid boxers, I decided I need a taste. Can you blame me? I moved back until I was right over him. I felt him move and looked up to find he had
come up on his elbows. Perfect.
I
smiled and grabbed hold of him at the base.
I held his eyes as I lower my head and slowly stuck my tongue out. The tip of my tongue met the tip of his cock
with the slightest of touches, just enough to collect the drop of his liquid
that was sitting there waiting.
Once
I swallowed it, I needed more. Without
waiting to notice his reaction, I closed my mouth over him, taking in as much
as I could. No teeth I decided. I wanted all him to feel all smoothness and
warmth.
It
seemed to please him, I guess, because when I flicked my eyes back up to his
face, his head was thrown back. Then he
started to respond to my movements by thrusting his hips.
I
closed my eyes to concentrate on my task at hand. I met his every thrust.
The
sound of his voice startled me.
“Jesus…Steph…Oh god…”
Silence.
“Stop…I…I…ohhh…won’t…please.”
Well, ok! I
was ready too. I moved back up to straddle his hips. Ranger’s head was still thrown back and his eyes closed. This wasn’t acceptable. I wanted to see his eyes as he entered
me. He had proved just how erotic that
could be. So I waited, not moving…just
like he had done.
After a few seconds, his head snapped up and eyes
flew open. Now I had his
attention. Locking my eyes with his, I
lowered just enough to rub against his tip for just a second, then pushed
myself down on him in one quick movement.
“Oh god,” he yelled as his head went back, his eyes
shut again, and he brought his hips up off the blanket.
He felt so good inside me, filling me. I started to
move. Slow and steady wins the race,
right?
The tingling started in my toes and worked its way
up my inner legs. He was buried so deep
inside me, it all felt so damn good. If
at all possible I needed more of him in me.
I leaned back and braced myself with my hand on his thighs. Oh…yeeeaahh.
We moved together, in rhythm. Good lord, I didn’t
feel like a separate person anymore. I
was so close to the edge. I didn’t want this to end, yet ached for release.
I didn’t have to wait long. The softest touch of
Ranger’s finger to my hard aching clit sent me flying. My inner muscles convulsed around Ranger as
my hips jerked wildly.
He grabbed hold of my hips to stop them, then pumped
into me hard, several times, releasing his hot stream of liquid.
Exhausted,
I fell on top of him. Wrapping his arms
around me, he rolled us on to our sides.
I snuggled into him, still joined, enjoying the feel of him and the
light rain falling on our skin.
The
Chase - Chapter 15
Sitting
next to Ranger, as the plane headed back to Trenton, I couldn’t stop my mind
from wandering back to the early start of our day.
“We
should go back to the house, or we’ll get wet.” He actually managed that with a straight face.
I
busted out laughing. “Did you just make
a joke…err…try to make a joke?”
All
Ranger did was smile as his body shook with silent laughter.
I
sat up “Oh my god! You have a sense of
humor!” He laughed out loud at
that. Well, I tried to hide the teasing
tone to my voice, I really did.
“Let’s
go,” he said as he stood. I just sat
and watched the water run down that fabulous naked body. Oh yeah…all mine.
Still
laughing, but this time I think it was at me, he said, “You drive me wild you
know that? Here I was worried about you keeping up with me.” I took the hand he held out and stood.
“Um…aren’t
you going to put your underwear back on?” I asked as he moved to lift the
blanket.
“Nope.
I told you there was no one here to see us, and besides,” he jerked his head to
the side, “you threw them in the sand.”
I looked over to where he motioned, and sure enough, I managed to toss
his undies in the sand.
“Don’t
worry about it, Babe. Can you grab them and the bucket too? We need to get a
move on. There’s not much time to
shower and pack before we have to catch our plane”
I
did as he asked and followed him up the beach.
Darn the luck about those boxers.
Now I was just going to have to watch his fine backside as we made our
way to the house. The burdens a woman
has to carry sometimes.
“You’re
staring,” he said over his shoulder.
“Damn
skippy I am,” I replied. Ranger just shook his head, but I could swear I saw
his shoulders shaking too.
*****************
Feeling
Ranger squeeze my hand, I opened my eyes as he spoke. “Babe, the plane is landing.
We’re home.”
I
must have grimaced. At least I know I
did on the inside, guess I must have on the outside too. “What’s the problem,
Babe?”
“Oh,
nothing.” I tried to wave him off with my hand. It didn’t work.
“Tell
me, please,” he begged. I looked at him
with a shocked expression. “I want you to feel as though you can tell me
things.” Oh geez, I think I hurt his
feelings. Gooey on the inside, I knew it.
Placing
my hand over his, I tried to explain. “It’s nothing really. I’m just concerned
about how things will go now that we’re home. That’s all.” He nodded his head in understanding.
“I
can see why that would bother you. It’s crossed my mind too.” Now I really was shocked. Before I even had to time to form a
question, he asked me one first.
“How
do you want it to go, Stephanie?” Shit,
did he just sound insecure? Time for damage control.
I
leaned in and narrowed my eyes. “Well, knowing me… and how I am, it will
probably be a bumpy ride. But one thing
I can tell you for sure - however, or where ever it goes, I want to go through
it with you.” He smiled his 200 watts
at me. I sat back and sighed. “I’m not naïve enough to believe that it’s going
to be like the last 24 hours have been.
But I guess that’s what worries me.
We’re home, Trenton, the ‘burg.
It’s not just us anymore.” I
know I looked sad because I felt sad.
“Babe,
all those things can only get us down if we let them. I have a feeling, that
after your tirade around town to find me, most everyone knows about us already
anyway. Morelli does and so does your mother.
Those were the two at the top of your worry list, right?” I nodded my
head.
He
brought his hand up to caress my face. “And as far as the ‘actives’ of the last
24 hrs, I can promise you, that will only get better. I love you,
Stephanie Plum.”
“I
love you too, Ricardo Manoso.” I couldn’t help but smile. Although somewhere in the back of my head,
my brain was thinking about the one person on my list he didn’t mention, that
hadn’t been dealt with yet.
**************************
Tank
met us at the airport, and drove us back to my apartment after we collected our
bags. After bringing our things
upstairs, Tank asked, “Do you need me to stay Boss?” He sounded serious, but when he looked at me, he wiggled is eyebrows.
I
smiled a sneaky smile and wiggled mine back. Tank about fell over. Ranger was right, none of this was going to
get me down. I wasn’t going to let it. This could actually be kind of fun, seeing
how people react when I don’t give them what they expect.
“Proud
of you, Babe,” Ranger chuckled. Turning
to Tank he said, “No, but can you and Lester bring the Mercedes back here?”
“No
problem.” I really think I stunned
Tank. He didn’t say another word before
turning and leaving.
Ranger
walked over and pulled me into his arms. My arms automatically went around his
waist, and I hung on for dear life. I
felt him sigh as he said, “Home.”
“Yeah,
home.”
***********************
We
spent the next hour catching up on things. Ranger spent most of the time on his
phone. I sorted laundry, listened to
messages and called Mary Lou to let her know I was back and I wanted my
hamster. Of course, I had to promise to
fill her in on all the details.
Just
as I hung up, Ranger came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist,
placing a kiss on my neck. “Had to
promise to tell her everything, huh?”
Sighing
big, I replied, “Yeah.”
He
chuckled in my ear. “Tell her what you
think is appropriate, Babe.”
I
leaned back into him and just nodded my head.
He really trusted me and treated me like an adult.
“That’s
because you are an adult and I know you can handle yourself.” Sometimes ESP was
great.
Turning
to look at him, I said, “Thank you.”
Just
as seriously, he replied, “You’re welcome.”
I
let my forehead fall to his chest. Good
god, this was really going to be a grown up relationship.
When
I looked back up at him, he was looking out the window. “Guess the guys brought the car
around.” He gave me a peck on the
forehead. “I’ll be right back.” He
turned, picked up his bag, and went out the door.
I
went into the kitchen to find something to eat. Opening the refrigerator door, I suddenly realized I shouldn’t
have bothered. When Ranger gets back,
I’m going to talk him into Pino’s.
No…wait. I’m going to ask him if
he’d like to go to Pino’s. I don’t need
to manipulate him. Wow, that was
something I was going to have to work on, old habits die hard.
Just
as I was coming out of the kitchen, I heard faint yelling coming from
outside. Going over to the window, I
gasped. My worse nightmare had just
come true.
Bobby
and Ranger were standing face-to-face, fists clenched, yelling at each
other. Oh shit.
I
ran for the door, picking up Ranger’s cell phone on my way out. I hit redial, because I knew the last person
he had been talking to on the phone.
“What?”
“Tank!
Get your ass over here right now! Bobby
and Ranger are about to go at it in my parking lot!” I shut the phone, not waiting for a response. I continued down the stairs and out of the
building.
I
just stepped through the glass door into the parking lot, when I noticed Ranger
had slid his right hand to the small of his back. Bobby was going the same thing.
Oh fuck.
In
an instant, they were both standing there, guns at their sides, glaring at each
other. At least the yelling had
stopped. . I prayed that the saying ‘if
looks could kill’, wasn’t going to come true.
Just
as I screamed, “NO!” three shots rang out.
Everything turned to slow motion, as I watched Ranger and Bobby fall to
the ground. Then my world went black.
The
End
Thanks
to Traci, Laurie, Kevan, Pat, Renee, Andrea and everyone else who helped me,
gave suggestions, and listened to me whine my way through this story! Sure hope everyone enjoyed it.
